so let's branch off from the "Overall State of Marist Athletics" thread with one for this school year, which began today with a road beatdown of a CAA team.
Hooray sports!

WSOC HC Leigh Howard is looking like a potentially great hire. Took a team picked for 7th in her first year and finished 2nd and made it to the tourney semi-finals. Picked for 4th this season so it will be interesting to see if she can beat expectations again. Sunday’s Towson win was a good omen. When you play a team picked for last you expect to put in a strong performance and, on the score board at least, they did just that. (Unfortunately no post-game quote from the coach in the recap). Being on the road made that even more impressive. Based on the recap it was the soph and frosh who carried the offense. Seemingly a lot of upside here.
FYI: Monmouth the unanimous (overwhelming, maybe) choice at #1. Seven of the eleven spots on the All-MAAC Preseason Team were filled by Monmouth Players. Rider, Quinny and Niagara shared the crumbs.

Marist tabbed for 4th in both soccers and volleyball. The 3.6 Roentgen of preseason prognostication. ("Not great...not terrible...")

I like to think of that seeding as in the top half and within striking distance. LOL

Volleyball off to an 0-5 start. Looks like a long year coming up under the new coach.

Volleyball off to an 0-5 start. Looks like a long year coming up under the new coach. ehhh, they'll go 12-6 in the MAAC at worst. Their OOC schedule was probably the toughest in the league and the MAAC is soooooooooooooooo bad. they're breaking in a new setter after graduating a 4-year starter while returning everyone else, takes time to get them all in rhythm is all.

I’m never gonna be one of the fans that judges any teams JUST on their play in the MAAC. Going 12-6 or 8-4 in MAAC but getting ass kicked by all other conferences doesn’t make for a successful team.
For me Men’s soccer beating Gonzaga is a good win

For me Men’s soccer beating Gonzaga is a good win when all of those other teams have a dozen scholarships and you have, like, four - what is supposed to happen? QU decided to spend some money on volleyball this past year and instantly they're more competitive and sweeping Seton Hall. They were up 2 sets to none on North Dakota yesterday including a 25-7 set 2 win and the Marist VB account tweeted "it's a rout" - I immediately said to myself, what a stupid thing to put out there, UND has considerably more talent up and down the bench; it's just a matter of them waking up. Marist will lose in 5. and bim bam boom, they did.

as far as soccer, any win is a good win, but if you want to go there, Gonzaga was 3K miles from home, is now 0-3, went 2-14-2 last year, has not won a match in West Coast Conference play since 2016, has not had a winning season since 2013. They're just a name of a basketball team we've heard of.

when all of those other teams have a dozen scholarships and you have, like, four - what is supposed to happen? - THIS I AGREE WITH but THAT is also my point.
I put it on the school that we DON'T put more resources into all sports to be competitive. To be content with being just ok in just the MAAC is not enough.
