Dear Pearl, Like you I have been reading the Marist Hoops Forum, but with one major difference. I have also been following the team for many, many years. Would an experienced coach, who claims to have coached over 1000 games, give advice on a team that they have not watched play and also insult the fans of that team? Talk about negativity. . . .
If you read all of my posts, you will note I have followed Chuck Martin since he first started coaching the Marist team. I was concerned he was never a head coach, but like other long time Marist fans was optimistic and hopeful. However, like you I was compelled to get involved in the forum because I was disgusted with negativity. My observations and research concluded that Chuck Martin was not head coach material and was in fact abusive to his players because of his inability to coach and lead.
Quite simply, no matter how hard Chuck Martin tries, he will never produce a winning team. What concerns me most is that he is destroying his players self esteem, confidence and future. I can go on , but you obviously read my posts and know where I stand.
Pearl, you stated " Trust when I tell you Marist is headed back to the glory days!!! ". That statement confirms to me that you are a Chuck Martin plant. In addition, your statement, that one star player will make a difference also confirms your lack of credibility as a "coach". A good coach knows that you need mutual respect of the players and their coaches, trust, teamwork, motivation, hard work, positive reinforcement, encouragement, leadership and great coaching to build a winning organization. The fact that Martin has had so many academic suspensions (two captains this year are out on academic suspensions) since coaching demonstrates that he truly does not care about his players (ask the players and their teachers if he cares or gets involved in their academics). I can go on, but just read my prior posts.
Yankee, great job responding to Pearl's nonsense. Thank you. I think we all know that the only way to give the players hope at this point is to remove Chuck Martin. Then we can move forward.
Pearl, as far as me being a man and talking to the coach, Chuck Martin does not even talk to his assistant coaches. He rules the team as a tyrant. Also, have you heard Martin speak to the press when he responds " ya man". He is a poor representation of Marist. Matin curses the refs (he goes overboard) and they can't stand him and he gets technical fouls and the team gets more foul calls because he is not professional. How do you know jgood is not a women? LOL.

Very impressive post whether you are a women or man is not the issue the issue is negativity. Never tried to insult any fans. No I'm no CM plant I am one who's been involved in bball as a player first and a coach who has many kids in d1 college ball as well as the NBA, so I have experience, just saying in order to turn a program around it takes much patience. I follow the message boards of many of my former players as well as other d-1 programs. Never meant that all you need is one star player ofcourse we know it takes a cohesive unit but you need players that can carry a team from time to time when a team is in a rut. As sort of an old school guy it was my players several years ago who turned me on to these forums ,ofcourse no matter what fans say players must be tough but when young potential recruits read all this crap as well as parents it gives a struggling program no help at all. Kids want a great education but they also want to go somewhere where they can win. I've attended several games this year as well as watched some on tv I think I have a feel somewhat for the team. The team needs a little more experience as well as an extension of the coach on the floor. In my years of coaching there are many times I have blown games as a coach but then there are times no matter how hard we practiced and trained it just didn't translate on the court in such cases some kids lacked experience while others were not good enough. That led team me sometimes getting out of character as a coach. Criticism is good for everyone but negativity is just not productive. Marist is a great school but any potential recruit who reads the forum will feel like the head coach is on the way out, makes it hard to sell the bball program. We all want to see Marist at the top, instead of going back and forth please remember all I stated was I have some up and coming players I'm trying to get there with Morton who will help play a part in the resurgence of the mens bball team. In my last statement pls remember what I stated about my cousin the community of coney island was calling for his head his first several years now hes accomplished what no other hs boys coach in nyc has ever done excellence sometimes takes time to develop. Just my point of view thanks!

Morton dropped 30 pts 11 ast 3 steals tonight! His team is 13-0 and #1 in Jersey ... We can't wait to see him in red and white. He seems like he has the personality to want to take on a challenge. He could be a legend in this area just by getting Marist to the Ncaa tourney. Pearl, you seem sincere in your post. But if any of those kids are turned off of Marist because of what myself or 5 other posters say, where is the long term judgement there? 4 year free education at a great school with top academics shoukd win out over 6 meanies on a message board. If it doesn't, their priorities probably aren't worthy of the school anyway.

Just my point of view thanks! Pearl, Thanks for adding an intelligent argument on behalf on Coach Martin. I've been waiting for one of his supporters to make some type of sense. Im still not convinced, however. You seem reasonable. Could you paint us a picture on how this program could get turned around in reasonable amount of time. We know you like the PG possibilities. Why should I believe this is going to get fixed? Sell it to me. I want to believe. Someone please make a legitimate argument for supporting this coach.

I too would welcome an intelligent argument as to how this team will turn it around, rather than "faith"
What confesses me Pearl is in one sentence you say we have the least amount of "talent" than every other school you have seen, then you say we have a good base with Prescott & Kemp. Don't we need to have talented kids now - just inexperienced talent in order to succeed next year. I watch these games and I can't figure out what will be different in 9 months - it does look like we will be getting a heck of a point guard - but will the excuse be that he is too young next year and has no DI exp.?
Rusin, Prescott, Price, Hall, and Carter will all be upper class-men with Alexis & Watson being RS Sophs (three years in system) - so how will their games change in the next 9 months - how much better are they going to be? Shouldn't we be seeing some of that right NOW? Shouldn't we be closer then 15-20 point losses right now in order to see a bright next year?
Or are we talking about a 10-12 win season next year as a "success" then hopefully a 17-18 win season in year 5? What year do you see a 20+ win season - year 5 year 6 year 7?
Do you feel they are running the right offense for this group of kids?
I just don't see any improvement from last year - I don't - wish i did.

Marist record under Martin is 15-70 (.176). We're supposed to feel positive about this?

With much due respect, Whats up with some of you guys and this sense of entitlement .. "Make me believe/ convince me/ tell me why i should support this coach". No one is trying to make yall change your opinion (everyones entitled to their views) ... If you dont like the coach , then you dont like him. Most understand, the results under this coach so far is simple bad (maybe an understatement:) if you know/ follow the program then you should understand the different circumstances (why) of the state of this program ... w/o any having to explain.
The issue is the approach ... how things are presented so negatively ... constructive criticism is one thing but nasty, vulgar, turbulent under tones is not necessary.

"Rusin, Prescott, Price, Hall, and Carter will all be upper class-men with Alexis & Watson being RS Sophs (three years in system) - so how will their games change in the next 9 months"
Every single one of those players have shown positiveS in their overall ability to produce and be productive / effective .. its just a matter of them coming together and playing as one cohesive unity .. the more they play together the more they will click .. you fail to point out that Kemp and Bowie are 2 of the better players on this team and will have a full season/off season to work on their weaknesses and get stronger ... wiser (watching tape) / preparation. Plus we have a Recruit coming in that is better than both our current pg's (whom have shown they can be productive @ this level.) ITS A MATTER OD CHEMISTRY .. AND CHEMISTRY, EXPERIENCE, and COMFORTABILITY TAKES A LITTLE TIME.
YOU DONT WANNA HEAR IT .. BUT YOU KNOW ITS TRUE

Those 5 plus the 2 RS have been playing basketball together for 17 months -
last year stats FG% .388 3PT% .351 FT% .638 RBPG 30.1 ASST 9.8 TO 14.1 PPG 56.1
this year FG% .378 3PT% .302 FT% .724 RPPG 33.3 Asst 9.5 TO 15.2 ppg 60.1
Should these numbers be improving? Even in the 1+ years they have been together? Or are we going to use the fact that every year there will be someone who is young, who hasn't played in this system, or is not used to their teammates - guess what Morton will be all these things inexperienced, have no chemistry, be young - and yet we all are expecting him to help turn this around.
Wasn't looking for a 15 win season this year - I'd have taken 8 but with seeing us truly competitive - these 30 point losses don't convince me that we have moved forward from last year. With the new big me we have improved our rebounding by 3 per game? Is that what we expected? Do we have more wins - yeah but honestly have improved or have those teams fallen. The Penn game was great absolutely and if i saw two or three more games like that against that kind of opponent then I'm all in with Martin.
I wasn't expecting the world this year just improvement - don't see it. Do you see glimpses of greatness in these players? Yeah but saw glimpses last year too in Johnson and Rusin - and what has happened to them?

Rusin just isn't a complete player. I don't see him getting any better. He isn't a consistent enough shooter to overcome the major flaws in the rest of his game. It goes to show you how good Will Whittington was. We could bank on 15 a game from him. Plus, no turnovers.
I do think Prescott is going to really make a jump. If Morton is the player I think he is, things will improve quickly. Kemp will get better. I'm hoping Watson turns the corner. I definitely think he's got ability. It is stupid that that they list him at 6'8 when he's 6'6
The key will be who makes the 2nd yr jump. I'm confident about Bowie. Alexis needs to show me more consistency. He needs to play. I think we should all relax. Next year is CM's year to make a move. If there isn't dramatic improvement, he will be released. Or should be. I think a key could be the 3rd scholorship. I would go for a guy that can make an immediate impact down low. A JUCO who can score and rebound. They need a guy that can consistently put up 12/8. We all like Kemp. I think the main problem is that they don't have a rock. A Stilphen type. They've all shown glimpses. Just not together.

I think they'd be lucky with 2 - if they dont win tomorrows game at home then that number could be lower
