There are over 1500 kids transferring that “might” be story for 20 of them That's why it's a smart path, sets you apart. Either join the system or be broken by it. Hofstra's joined the system and it's working for them.

I don't understand - "this is the path now" or " join the system" - what is there for Marist to join? We don't have NIL $. So what do we do? If we have great player from unfortunate background we do what we can to FIND him NIL $??
If coaches and institutions just sit back and say "well this is it nothing we can do" then they are extinct, coaches and college needs to FIGHT to balance the field to bring back what was college basketball. IF nothing changes Marist can not and will not compete. You are rooting for other MAAC teams to lose more people then us so we can be a little less worse then them to win some games.
Make the kids "pros" .... Make them sign a contract.... Pay them a salary.... be able to fire them....

If this super league breakaway happens and it incorporates basketball then everyone else is basically D2 Premium anyway.
It's kinda impossible to "fight back" or "balance the field" when federal judges keep declaring all previous measures to do just that to be illegal restraint of trade.
Maybe MAAC programs are just an evolutionary dead end footnote, like the passenger pigeon or the dodo bird.

Make the kids "pros" .... Make them sign a contract.... Pay them a salary.... be able to fire them.... Did you not see the article I posted? It's about how Hofstra encourages their top players to portal and leave the school so that the players can earn more money in NIL. They then use that to recruit other players, showing them that they'll A) always do right by them and B) put them in position to play at a high-major and earn more in NIL. That's what I mean by the path. That's an easy path to success, if you have a staff good at development. By the system, I mean this system where players like Allen or past guys like Ituka, Wright, and others left for greener (emphasis on green) pastures. Either we can get blind sided by this system where we are a stopgap in these kids college careers, or we can do it like Hofstra where it's part of our selling point to potential recruits and we can plan ahead better for eventual departures. Either we can play into the system or just get chewed up by it, like Siena has been for the past few seasons. This world of NIL is around to stay. As you said, we don't have the money to compete and we'll always be a stepping stone. I think we need to accept that and use being a stepping stone as a pitch to recruits.

Where does education fit in with this?
Isn’t that the purpose of college in the first place?

Kjones - if you are selling me on 3 and 4 stars coming here for a year - I am all in but that isn’t what is happening.

how do schools justify/maintain their not for profit tax free status and also sponsor for profit athletic programs full of per diem paid athletes?
How is this not a conflict of their core mission?

I’m linking the transcript/recording of a radio show featuring an anti-trust attorney who believes athletes are employees under existing law and the AD at St. Joseph’s University who warns against painting all D1 colleges with the same brush. The moderator/host really did her homework on the issues and the ensuing conversation is totally on point. The attorney did a great job laying out the legal issues in layman's terms since you need to understand the legal background to get the point/counterpoint of conversation. The discussion gets to the heart of what we are discussing in this thread (the NCAA as a monopoly, athletes as employees, and college mission) and how these issues might drive the future of college athletics. It not a short read/listen but IMO it’s well worth it to better understand why it seems so difficult to simply define what a college athlete is today. With the newest commitment, below is how our roster and depth chart fill out. Without knowing anything about him, this Roberts kid seems like a depth piece and somewhat of a Salton clone. We still have 3 scholarships left to fill, and based on "interest" being expressed on Twitter the staff is actively looking to fill Allen's void and add shooters. I would hope with the remaining spots we get a true strong rebounding big, potentially another big for depth or stretch 4 and a three point specialist to come off the bench.
I'll have trust in the staff throughout the rest of the roster building process, and I am just thankful that the portal deadline has passed and we still have Collins and Pascarelli on our team.
2024-2025 Depth Chart PG- Jadin Collins 6’0”, Caleb Mackrey 6’3” SG- Josh Pascarelli 6’3” SF- Elijah Lewis 6’5”, Trace Salton 6’6”, Travis Roberts 6'6" PF- Jaden Daughtry 6’6”, Jason Schofield 6’9”, Matt McCool 6’8” C- Jackson Price 6’8”
2024-2025 Scholarship Breakdown by Class Year Freshmen- 1 Scholarship Player Schofield (Redshirt)
Sophomore- 2 Scholarship Players Collins and Pascarelli
Junior- 6 Scholarship Players Mackrey, Williams Daughtry, Lewis, Salton, and McCool
Senior- 1 Scholarship Player Price
