So the transfer portal officially opens today, and it will certainly be chaotic for the next month or two but I figured it would be a good time to look at our current roster construction for next year and see where we think the staff can add and improve.
Note that I am operating under the assumptions that Cooley, Farris and Sulack are all gone and that the staff retroactively redshirts Schofield for this past year and that nobody transfers out. It would appear right now we have 11 of 13 scholarships filled with the depth chart and scholarship by year broken down below. I would suspect Salton, McCool, and Harris might be candidates to explore the transfer portal based on minute restrictions but you never know.
From a need perspective, I assume the staff sees Schofield as a new addition to the front court next year but I think we still need to go out and recruit another big man in the transfer portal (especially with Price only having one more year). Someone more physically imposing to spell Allen for a few minutes and anchor the paint in his absence (as Price and Schofield are more stretch bigs rather than bangers down low), then that player would take on a bigger role once Price graduates.
Mackrey from his highlights and stats definitely is more of an attacking guard rather than a shooting guard so the other scholarship should really be focused on a wing that can consistently be a deep threat (hence why the staff was already looking at the Malik Moore kid from Pepperdine 6'5" and shoots 36% from three).
If we are only having to fill two scholarships those would be my two needs to go after, then obviously we will have better clarity in the coming days as to if we are losing any of our current roster to the portal. If the staff can keep Collins, Pascarelli, Daughtry, Allen, Price and Brickner that would be massive.
