Hopefully they can use that cash to help rev up the program. Crew was huge when I was a student. They used to compete really well against the brand name schools. Seems the program peaked when the 2002 Men’s Heavyweight Eight finished ranked 16th in the nation and won several races at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. That level of performance was kind of unthinkable. Former president Dennis Murray ranks it among the three greatest accomplishments for Marist athletics alongside Smits and his two NCAA tournament appearances and the WBB sweet 16 appearances.

Rowing is probably an awesome sport, great for athletes. But let's be real for a second. I love my son and daughter. They play numerous sports. But I jumped for joy when they didn't want to be on the swim team anymore. As a parent, being at a swim meet is probably analogous to having your wisdom teeth extracted over and over again. I am sure it is similar for crew:).

The most underrated event when I was in college was the Head of the Charles in Boston. We would road trip from Poughkeepsie every year and crash in frat houses/dorms from Harvard or Tufts.
There was over 100 colleges from around the world in Harvard Square that weekend and on race day every college (including Marist) had a tent on river with a keg. Open container in effect. You filled up at any tent you wanted.
You’d drop bottles of champagne to the boats via a string on their way back from race.
It was always a blast.
PS if you haven’t seen or even better read The Boys in the Boat you are missing out - the book actually goes into more depth about the Poughkeepsie regatta on the banks of Marist
