Claire Oberdorf had to sit on the sideline for most of her junior year as she recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament she incurred while playing AAU basketball in the summer of 2013.
"I was just driving down the lane and I just tried to jump-stop in front of a big girl," Oberdorf said. "The next thing I knew I was on the ground."
What came next was surgery and an intensive rehabilitation stint that got this Greensburg Salem standout ready to play both basketball and softball for the Golden Lions that year.
"Honestly, I thought that it wasn't as bad as I expected," Oberdorf said. "My surgeon and my physical therapist both pushed me to get better as soon as I could and, honestly, the recovery wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be."
Even though she and her surgically repaired knee played well last year, everything she accomplished in her comeback was only a precursor to the breakout seasons she had to end her high school career.
Oberdorf, the 2015 Post-Gazette East Xtra Female High School Athlete of the Year, may not have been the only reason Greensburg Salem qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA basketball playoffs, but she was the main reason as she finished second in the WPIAL in scoring this season behind Blackhawk's Chassidy Omogrosso.
Oberdorf, who led the WPIAL in scoring for much of the year, finished the regular season averaging 26.5 points per game, while Omogrosso, a Duquesne recruit, outscored her by only four points in their 22 respective games to win the title with 26.7 a contest. Early on, she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career as she scored 584 of the team's 1,018 points (57.4 percent) during the regular season.
"It was my last year and I just wanted to make it my best," Oberdorf said. "I just worked hard and was just trying to give my team the best chance to win and ended up having a pretty good year."
Being the go-to player on a team that needed her to score in the 20s, and many times the 30s, every night just to stay competitive can eventually take a toll.
"I just feel like, whatever situation you're in, it's stressful and you have to overcome a lot, but that's the name of the game," Oberdorf said. "Most girls, when they're seniors, feel like they have that responsibility to not quite carry the team, but be a role model and leader so the younger girls will keep the program going."
Even after all her success on the court, there is little chance she will be playing the sport collegiately. Prior to the school year, she had already committed to Marist - the same school as her sister Jayne - to play softball. …

Tweet of the Night A Daly Dose Of Hoops dalydoseofhoops 1h1 hour ago Brian Giorgis: "We're back to people being about the team, and not people being about themselves." Coach Giorgis has got to move on, he keeps pounding the theme that these were selfish players that left HIS program. His ego has been bruised, he must feel the transfers have made him look bad so he has continues to shine a negative light on them with quotes like this one. Great coaches do not always have great character.

Thank GOD our great coach has GREAT CHARACTER in SPADES as well as his staff!!!!! And it isn't just Giorgis saying this - it is the fans, the players, really anyone who watched this team last year.... there was one player who put herself above the team. One of the things that made this team so successful all these years was that the players loved being around each other (away from the sport not just on the court), they always had each others backs and never backstabbed each other. Look no further then Allenspach's wedding recently and all the faces that were there from her team including coach. Heck even Coffey was quoted as saying we only want players here that WANT to be here. Those players leaving was the best thing that could have happened to the program it reinvigorated the returning players and brought everyone back on the same page. Tori's response to the exodus and her commitment to getting that sixth year is the type of person we want representing Marist.

The players, the fans, even the media can continue to bash the girls that left, the coach should rise above it. Because of his win loss record Giorgis gets a pass when it comes to his abrasive and sometimes condescending personality, which may be the real reason these girls left. This love fest some feel he has with his players has its limits, many of players I've spoken to over the years have a acute dislike for the man.

You are so full of shit it is scary. You never show up except to bash the coach and say he is "abrasive" you keep changing your sign on (nickoshea96) but you are the same dick who keeps going after coach.
And for the record NONE of us are bashing the girls for leaving - we KNOW that Birchmeier was home sick very early on as a Freshman and we wish her the best, we KNOW that Lai didn't enjoy the system and that her BOYFRIEND is at UNH so she left, we KNOW that Fogarty was Lai's best friend and followed her. No issue with any of them wish them all the best.
Blais might be the only one who used "abrasive coach" as reason for leaving but Blais was only about Blais - thought she was better then the team as a whole, wanted more for herself.
As far s coach saying that there is more of a "team mentality" this year then last - well that is a FACT period

Yet ALL the women I have spoken to loved everything about Marist and coach - yes he yelled at practice especially when they made same mistakes over and over, but when it came to having their backs he always had it. Again look no further then the # of players who stay on, who continue to support program, the Viani's of the world who kept coming back to play for him, the amount of college coaches that have come out of this "mid-major" program is unreal.

Towards an idiot like you - it is hard not to be condescending. If it's acceptable to be condescending toward a poster you consider to be an idiot, then let me ask this, have either of you two clowns ever played college BB and know that a coach can be strict disciplinarian and not come off as a bully . I've had both kinds, my teammates and I would never bad mouth our coach to the public, they wouldn't know that we couldn't stand him.
