To offer some examples of some relatively new facilities, I recently had a tour of the SUNY Binghamton arena that seats 5,300 for basketball and up to 8,000 for concerts and the like and serves more of an all-purpose sports/entertainment arena. I think they were able to host the conference tournament in there and they have some pretty good concerts from what I have seen. They hold graduation in there, conventions, etc. It was built in 2004 for something like $33 million.
It was a big commitment, which they were then rewarded for by having a scandal rock their basketball team. This proves it is a big commitment and not an automatic upgrade for your team. It is probably tough for the Marist Administration to commit that kind of money for something like that, especially in this economy, so instead of “ripping up the old road and paving something nice and new, they decide to fill in the potholes and put out a few flower pots” and hope it is good enough for now. $33 million is probably something like $40 million today. Is it worth the possibility of bringing in better players and would they be able to get enough other uses out of it to make it worth a $40 million commitment? Tough question. I’m sure they could scale it down some and get nomar to donate the cement, but how much of a commitment is the right commitment? I think that is probably where they are right now. It's easy to say we need a new venue because its always easy to spend someone else's money and I would love a new place like that, but putting myself in their shoes, I can't say I blame them on not committing or delaying a commitment to something like that.
