welcome, friends, to opening day of the 2021-22 athletic school year.
As always, women's soccer kicks things off first. Opening match is 6 pm tonight at Loyola (Md.) on ESPN+. Certainly looking like a rebuilding year under essentially first year head coach Brittany Kolmel. Picked 8th in the MAAC preseason poll after only getting to play 1 match in the spring. If they can cobble together enough MAAC points to finish 6th and reach the postseason, I think you have to take that as a win.
Men's soccer starts next Thursday night at Saint Joseph's while volleyball opens the following day at a tournament in Tucson. They'll face host Arizona to start and then UC San Diego later that evening with New Mexico State the next day. Tough competition. Cross country starts 9/4 with a local meet over at Vassar Farm.

Men's soccer and volleyball both tabbed for 5th in the MAAC. Kinda think that's an underrating for MSOC, which I feel like is very talented and about to put it all together, even though they haven't played since 2019. Volleyball is a total wildcard to me, it's almost an entirely new roster since 2019 (I put no stock in the four glorified scrimmages they played in the spring).

Volleyball loses the first game to Arizona 3-0 (Az has received votes in the top 25 poll). First 2 sets not that close but the last one they lost 23-25. Doesn't really tell us how they'll fair in the MAAC but nice to see them come out strong in the third

Volleyball - something cooking here? Although swept by Arizona, the last set was 25-23. Just took the first set off a UC San Diego squad that is receiving votes in the national preseason coaches poll (I'm tempted to think those votes were meant for University of San Diego instead, but UCSD wouldn't have appeared at all unless they were on multiple ballots, so maybe?)

Foxes take down UCSD in a 5-set nailbiter. Perennial WAC champ/contender New Mexico State tomorrow; home opener is Tuesday night against A-East preseason #1 UAlbany. Marist will also host a Big East squad (Seton Hall) the following Tuesday btw.

VB beats Harvard. Nice to beat an ivy even if they were picked fourth. Seems like they’ve been really inconsistent; some games they look great others they don’t. Guess that’s what happens when you don’t play for like 2 years. Just get some chemistry for Maac play

Men's soccer beat St. John's in Queens
told y'all I had a good feeling about this season. They host New Hampshire, preseason top 25 team, soon. First they are at UAlbany though.

New Hampshire comes to Tenney Stadium tonight at 5-0-0 on the year and ranked #9 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Massive opportunity for men's soccer.

Marist lost to UNH 2-1 but I feel like you can't be too down considering it was against, yanno, a national top 10 team.
Elsewhere...volleyball swept the MAAC weekly awards behind Maddie Waumans (Player), Morgan Owens (Libero - 2nd time) and Jillian Hanna (Rookie)
Women's soccer concluded an oddly truncated OOC schedule at 1-2-1 (beat Fordham, drew Maine, lost by 1 each to Army and Loyola). No games were canceled, they just only scheduled 4 of them instead of 7 or 8 like most of the MAAC. Not sure the reasoning or circumstances there. They open MAAC play Saturday at home against Fairfield (tough match, hope for 3 but 1 is acceptable) and then host Saint Peter's and Canisius (must take 6 points).

I'm intrigued to see how volleyball does in the MAAC. The only common opponent they have with Fairfield is Seton Hall, we lost 3-2 to them and Fairfield lost 3-1. So definitely seems like they can be competitive with the stags. They did lose Sasha van der merwe, who was looking like their best hitter, in the Seton Hall, not sure how long she will be out for. But since she left, Waumans has taken into her roll nicely obviously by winning POW. If we can get Sasha back this year, could be a nice finish

volleyball back to .500 in the MAAC after a rough WNY trip last weekend, cleaning out a rancid Manhattan team yesterday and getting past Iona in four today. I think van der Merwe will return before too much longer. Quinny comes to town Wednesday night and then the Foxes open the renovated Yanitelli, excuse me, "Run Baby Run Arena" Saturday at SPU.
Women's soccer so far has done what I said they needed to do, drawing Fairfield and beating Saint Peter's. Men's soccer stumbled last night at a good Cornell team; MAAC starts Wednesday at Canisius.
