Marist could get into a bit of a battle with Siena for Carmody. I would be very happy and shocked if he ends up here. Have to figure Lee helps our cause.

Not trying to be an annoying naysayer, but Lee did leave Carmody to come to Marist. I understand it was because he wanted to get closer East, but he still left him. Are we sure the connection is that tight still?

I just hope that Murray realizes that to keep a guy for 5-8 yrs, you can't pay chump change. If you pay a great coach top dollar, they'll only leave for a BCS type job. We can't afford another Brady situation. There's no reason Marist can't be a top mid-major program...

I would say 300,000 is kinda pushing it. We just don't have the revenue streams at this level that other schools do.

Remember also there are a lot of perks that coaches are offered .Housing ,travel money a lot of other things ..plus a good group of fans .,fans that stuck with a team when they weren't doing well .So 200,000 is on par with most others in this league .lets not too far out with price.,still a lot of good talent out there coaching wise.

I agree 200,000-max 300,000 is a fair number. I just don't see Carmody accepting that number, even coming off the rough northwestern years. People know his past, know the difficulty he faced with his last job. He should be able to easily get one of these A-10, upper tier CAA type jobs. For example, ODU is looking for a coach. They just can offer so much more than Marist most likely.

I don't think $300,000 is unreasonable.... If Siena could pay McCaffrey $400,000+. , then Marist should easily be able to afford that... Marist has twice the enrollment. I'm assuming that should more than make up for any discrepancies in attendance revenue. Raise ticket prices from $10 to $12 if you have to. That's still a bargain. I'm just sayin. If they care about winning, they'll do it. Everything they've done in the past hasn't worked so they need to change.

If they pay $300,000 , they won't lose a good coach to the next level up... How about a contract with incentives??? Not sure what's allowable via NCAA rules but they can't go the cheap route. This isn't the same as women's basketball or other MAAC sports. I know there are a lot of opinions on women's coaches and how good they are. Do you guys honestly think a women's coach who makes $125,000 would turn down $500,000 a yr to coach men? Unless they are all philanthropists, it's because they aren't offered. It's totally different and is no way a guaranteed thing.

Of course, neither was hiring a high school coach a guaranteed thing for the women. Unfortunately, the administration, not necessarily at the AD, has a reputation and practice of lowballing coaches' salaries.

I agree with that... Not much scrutiny of womens coaches though... It's not like if Marist was mediocre or bad like they were under Lamb that there would be a big "fire the coach" campaign.. How big of a gamble was it??? He's a great women's coach and had all his connections from Lourdes.

I think the AD just needs to take a firmer stance with the power(s) that be. Spend the extra $100,000. They'll get it back and then some. They'll sell a minimum of 1000 tickets seats a game if they win consistently... That's roughly $100,000 a yr right there... If Marist won in men's like they did in women's they'd be a huge mid major player... Ok. Not ten titles in a row. But ten competitive yrs in a row..

I was just pointing out that there are no guaranteed things in coaching but I would bet that Giorgis could coach the hell out of the men. He's a great coach - baseball, softball, volleyball and basketball - period. Calling him a "great women's coach" is insulting and downplays all the national attention he has brought Marist - more than the men have since Smits.
My understanding is that Marist is a "take it or leave it" offerer. There is no negotiating. They make an offer, you accept or you do not, but become highly offended if you dare to make a counteroffer. I am convinced Giorgis is a philanthropist and Brady smartly took the best offer.

I know he's a great coach . It's not the coaching part I doubt.. For example, I don't think Geno Auriemma is a better coach than Bill Carmody.. Let him try it and we'll see how successful he is. He's a good salesman. Basketball isn't that complicated... My point was that if everything was really equal wouldn't more great women's coaches make the switch for much more money??? I called him a women's coach because that's all he's coached at the college level. I'd like to see him take a shot at coaching men's college basketball.

And I agree with you Pinions. I think that he emphasizes team and gets the most out of all of his teams. This year might have been his best coaching job yet. I wish he had his two centers. My cousin played for him at Lourdes. I know he's a great coach...
