Impressive job Yank, I definitely can live with this record. But I disagree with some of the scores. Vermont & Rutgers are worst than last year so i don't see us losing by 20 to them and losing by 30 to St Peter's is crazy. If you take out the game against Villanova, they should all be very competitive.

I have no idea what to expect. They are, once again, gonna be so dependent upon newbies. Albeit this year the players won't be asked to play out of position game after game.
If Martin's game management skills are improved and the this bunch can make notable improvements in their free throw shooting, rebounding and cut down the turnovers, I guess that, plus last years experience, is worth 8 wins.

And Yankee got laughed at for 6 by MTS on the MAAC board. I saw both Siena games last year and Marist competed. With Bauer getting help and the kids getting confidence, I see definite improvement. Yankee, where does MTS get off thinking Marist is a joke and Siena is so great(this year) They have 2 proven players. Plus, I'm telling you, Rossiter was helped greatly by Franklin. Marist isn't as bad off as everybody thinks. If Price and Prescott take the natural second year leap, they can be pretty good. Alexis may help as well..

Very specific predictions haha. OOC schedule will be interesting, I like some of the matchups and we should have a very good idea of how our bigs will compete before the main MAAC chunk happens. I'm looking at the Holy Cross game in particular as a very good program historically that has fallen on hard times with new coaches, much like us. They also have a younger team with a very talented senior center. Like Yankee I think Watson can put us over the edge, but only if Prescott is playing (have we got official word yet?) to help shut down their high scoring guards. A win at BU early in the season would be huge confidence builder and could have really good ramifications down the line! I'd love to see Bauer be a Technical machine in his senior year. It's nice to have someone showing emotion since it wasn't coming from Chuck too often last year!

Gotta say, Martin & Admin did a hellava Job of putting together a great schedule! This schedule is extremely balanced and well thought out! Also with such a deep depth chart this year with multiple players at each position. Martin will now have the opportunity/ options to manage games well (being that he has more than just a bunch of guards .. haha).. and he will!!
BTW .. Yankee, awesome job w/ the schedule predictions! .. only thing is I believe the scoring will be more balanced and spread out by Rusin, Watson, Prescott, Bauer, a little Bowie and Price (but bigger on assist, setting guys up and scoring when open or needed)

It seems everyone is counting on Prescott to be a major part of the improvement of the Red Foxes this season. BUT do we know if he is eligible to play the first semester?
With Prescott for the entire schedule - 9 wins With Prescott for only 2nd semester - 7 wins Without Prescott at all - 5 wins Yes he is that good!

COACH AND PROGRAM
It is not always easy for a coach to keep things in perspective when his team is mired in the disappointment of a one-win season, but Marist coach Chuck Martin did the best he could.
Forced to play a younger and smaller lineup when big men Menelik Watson, a 6-8 power forward, and Casiem Drummond, a 6-10 transfer from Villanova, were not cleared to play last season, and having to play half of the season without point guard R.J. Hall (3.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 1.6 apg) were huge factors in Marist's struggles last season.
Marist Red Foxes Last Season 1-29 (.033) Conference Record 1-17 (10th) Starters Lost/Returning 1/4 Coach Chuck Martin (Monmouth '93) Record At School 11-52 (2 years) Career Record 11-52 (2 years) RPI Last 5 years 102-96-114-261-334
"They know that the team that played last year was not the same team that took the picture for the media guide," Martin said of his players.
The good news for the Red Foxes? Watson and Hall are good to go this fall, the undersized group that played out of position most of last season has lived and learned, and most are projected to return to their natural positions and more size and help is on the way.
"My whole thing was lose the battle, win the war," Martin said of last season. "Hopefully, when these kids are sophomores and juniors, they will be battle tested and we'll be a pretty good team.
"We are bringing some kids in, building that talent base and going from there."
PLAYERS
Marist is also intent on getting bigger. The addition of Watson, and freshmen Adam Kemp, who is 6-9, and Pieter Prinsloo, who is 6-10, will provide an immediate boost on the glass for a team that fin-ished last in the MAAC in rebounding margin (-6.4 rpg).
"You immediately become a better rebounding team and you should immediately become a better defensive team," Martin said of adding that size.
The Red Foxes, whose lone win came on Jan. 2 against Manhattan, finished the season with 18 straight losses while finishing last in the MAAC in scoring offense (56.1 ppg), scoring margin (-14.4), field-goal percentage (.388), field-goal defense (.459), assists (9.9 apg) and steals (5.2 spg).
With eight of Marist's top nine scorers returning, Martin is confident his team can improve and real-izes Hall is a key component.
"We missed him big time," Martin said of the 5-10 junior who appeared in just 15 games. "We missed his leadership and his ability to run the team, and we were a different team without him."
The Red Foxes should also be a different team with Watson, a 270-pound native of England who will provide an immediate threat in the paint with his soft hands and ability to finish around the basket.
"We are thinking that he can do some real, real good things for us," Martin said. "Even if he doesn't have great stats, he's going to give us a low-post presence. "He really understands how to play with other people," Martin said. "His IQ on how to play is high."
Blue Ribbon Previews Take an Inside look at the MAAC with Blue Ribbon's 2010-11 team reports:
.Canisius Fairfield Iona Loyola (Md.) Manhattan Marist Niagara Rider Saint Peter's Siena
Watson should ease the burden shouldered by Korey Bauer (7.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg) last season. Bauer, a 6-9 senior, was the only Red Fox to start all 30 games and was their only natural post player.
"I think he's a guy who can help us out," Martin said. "He started every game for us last season, and you can't put a price tag on that."
Additional frontcourt help will come from Kemp, Prinsloo and redshirt freshman Anell Alexis, who missed last season with a torn ACL.
At 6-9 and 240, Kemp has wide shoulders and the ability to bang inside, but he can also leave his feet to get to rebounds and block shots. He spent last season prepping at Winchendon (Mass.) and before that averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a senior at Vernon Verona Sherrill High School in Central New York.
"He's one of those guys that's deceptive when you meet him because he looks like a plodder, but he runs the floor very, very well," Martin said.
Prinsloo, a native of South Africa, is a skilled big man who helped Dover (Del.) High School to the state championship game last season. He averaged 10 points and 13 rebounds.
"He's a pick-and-pop guy on offense, but he's also very active on the glass," Martin said.
Alexis, is 6-6 with long arms. The son of former Syracuse standout Wendell Alexis, he was a top-30 player as a senior in New Jersey at St. Benedict's and should grow into his role as his recovery from injury continues.
With Hall back, there should be more stability in the backcourt.
Candon Rusin (9.5 ppg, 1.3 rpg) led the Red Foxes in scoring last season while earning a spot on the MAAC's All-Rookie Team. Rusin, 6-4 and 190 pounds, is a natural shooting guard who spent a lot of time at the forward spots. Playing out of position didn't hinder his outside shooting, however, as he connected on 58-of-135 attempts from three-point range (.430), which ranked third in the conference.
"He's a kid that everyone took notice of," Martin said. "He's got a chance to be really, really good."
Fellow sophomore Devin Price (9.1 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 2.6 apg), a 6-1 guard, also received a baptism un-der fire last season. He was the only Red Fox with more assists (78) than turnovers (58) while logging a lot of minutes at the point.
"He had a good year under some tough circumstances," Martin said. "Trying to lead a team as a freshman with two or three other freshmen on the floor is not an easy thing to do."
Price, who also led the team in steals with a modest 24, shot very well for a first-year point guard (.387 3PT) and scored in double figures 17 times.
Rob Johnson (6.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg), a 6-7 swingman, was also pressed into more early action than expected. He had a solid season, making 29 starts, but spent a lot of time in the post, where he battled foul trouble. He should benefit from the additional size on the roster this season.
"He has the talent to become a pretty good player in this league," Martin said.
So does Sam Prescott (7.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg), a 6-3 guard who showed promise as a freshman in 2009-10 before missing the second half of the season with academic issues. An explosive offensive player, he scored a career-high 21 points at Loyola on Jan. 15.
"He's exciting," Martin said. "He's got a tremendous, tremendous upside."
Dejuan Goodwin (5.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.3 apg), a 6-2 guard, is a redshirt senior who provides leader-ship and experience. He also has the ability to score, as evidenced by his 18-point effort at Fairfield.
"He's just a solid guy who does what it takes," Martin said.
The same can be said for redshirt sophomore Dorvell Carter (2.6 ppg, 1.9 rpg). A 6-6 wing, Carter had to play center at times last season.
"He's worked really hard in the offseason and has gotten leaner and faster," Martin said. "He's been productive when he has played."
Martin is also excited about the prospects of incoming 6-5 freshman Jay Bowie, who helped Tampa (Fla.) Prep reach the Florida Class 2A state title game. He averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds and carried a 3.7 grade-point average in high school.
"I think he could be a steal," Martin said. "He's got a great attitude and motor and plays hard."
BLUE RIBBON ANALYSIS
BACKCOURT: C- BENCH/DEPTH: C- FRONTCOURT: C INTANGIBLES: C+
Marist endured a nightmare season in 2009-10 but should be better for it. The question is, how much better?
"It's a tremendous challenge for us, but it's all about opportunity," Martin said. "It's a new season and a new opportunity for us to reinvent our program and to reinvent ourselves individually, but we need to that together."
The Red Foxes have just three upperclassmen on scholarship and will be counting heavily on newcomers, such as Watson, to carry a large load.
The sophomore class is strong with Rusin, Price, Johnson and Prescott (if he can clear up his academic issues) and Hall can provide stability if he stays healthy and eligible.
Additional size will help in the frontcourt, but there is not a great deal of depth to deal with foul trouble and injuries. Marist is probably at least another year away from making a significant jump in the conference standings.
