Marist has the second best women's college basketball team in Poughkeepsie these days.

Marist has the second best women's college basketball team in Poughkeepsie these days. Might be the third if Dutchess County Community College sponsors one.

The older announcer summed up the problem with the Marist offense perfectly. My favorite announcer in the MAAC. When Griffs were bad, he didn’t sugarcoat, including calling out specific players. Good listen.

Yeesh. Starting to get the sense this team has thrown in the towel.

Marist basically has 3 D1 players on roster. I can't blame the players. Need talent. Need better coaching. Need accountability from all. This is just bad.

The older announcer summed up the problem with the Marist offense perfectly. They telegraph their passes therefore it predictable. Their spacing is lousy and the ball gets stuck in a guards hands resulting in a desperate shot at the end of the clock. There is no motion to the motion. Open or not Canisius shoots 35% from the 3 point line but they kill you in the paint. Marist chose to shut down the paint but Canisius shoots 60% from 3. So then they go away from the plan and Eleko goes off because Marist’s posts are either 2 small or too slow to cover her. Sometimes even a smart plan doesn’t work. The program is just in a bad place. Spacing and motion in the offense is a coaching issue. Staff needs to pick it up.

The clock on the coach started this year despite the fact she has been on the staff for 20+ years. They don’t have scholarships to give unless they change their stripes and tell kids to move on. The announcer said a coach usually gets three years to show material progress. Since he mentioned he was a former athletic director I’ll assume he knows what he’s talking about. Coach will get at least that. Hopefully the players will take the off season to determine whether they want to play up to the standards Marist has established and dedicate time to improve their skills and their conditioning. Hopefully the staff will take a deep dive into how they approached coaching this group, the type of players they recruit, and adjust accordingly.

My kids high school coaches would run camps and have summer workouts to teach the kids how to do basic stuff like running the lanes and all that. And the kids would get better. My message to the team is WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES and you will get better. Go back and watch film of the twins, Grace and STUDY how they won. We should really be doing better than this.

Coach will only get that is there is progress, if one can see the talent is there. I do not see 1 player who you can build around

Fisher and Zaria are by far the 2 best players but if you keep them next year then in year 3 you are starting over, and will regress again without new/real talent on roster.
There is no one on this roster who should be in the starting lineup come 2025.
You have to pray that the 2 freshman are that good because if they aren't getting real minutes then the staff missed AGAIN. Then you need to have 2 transfers who have more than 1 year left to come in - they need to replace PG and F. (or you give her 15 scholarships and then you can keep Z and F)
Again the offense is NOT working with Zaria and Fisher - so even though they are the best 2 players they are not getting it done.

I fully believe Zaria and Ki should be set free to finish their careers on winning teams with more talented players. They deserve a shot at postseason.

I do not see 1 player who you can build around It would be a PR disaster for the college to fire her after only two recruiting classes and one full cycle with Volchok. She’s Giorgis’ hand picked successor. The college went along with that. Good luck getting any up and coming coach who values their career to take the Marist job after that

1 hope she turns it around 2 if she doesn’t have two ALL-MAAC rookies come in or some real impactful transfers and they win single digit again she is in trouble
Coaches won’t look at her as been given only 2 years they will see her as being there 20 years and involved with recruiting every kid on roster.
These are her players no way around it.

The Rebekah Hand, Alana Gilmer, Grace Vander Weide, and Rachel Fitz's of the world now will require NIL $ to get them to Marist - Erin has none. Fairfield is an anomaly - when the Fordham coach was fired she directed the Freshman to go to Fairfield.
Yes there are the Willow Duffels of the world out there that need to be found.
I will say this about this team - they do not seem to have the drama that came 2 years ago - the seem to be women of character.
There is a real reason mid-majors are looking overseas more and more - there is no NIL, the kids actually appreciate a full ride and are not keeping their hands out saying "well what else can you give ME" The fact that Marist has no gone that route is very telling.
