For all the fanfare Pitino brought, I agree that he did not move the needle at Iona one bit.
I think he realized that too. He bolted at the first opportunity, before he became stale

Interesting and plausible scenario from an excellent poster on the Iona Board. He takes a wider view than just “RP lied to us (Iona) and better dealed us at the first opportunity”. Definitely contrarian, but plans and timelines do change. “Did it occur to a few of you that Iona may have initiated this process? I can come up with a couple of reasons for doing this. Iona recently built a new business school. They acquired a new campus and is the middle of a health sciences start-up. Now may not be the time for us to playing in Las Vegas at 2 in the morning, or flying to Hawaii, etc. We are paying coach $1million, but we are not prepared at this time to go to $2 million.
Pulling on a thread introduced by ctbill, hawaiibill, and his other brothers, Iona and Coach have mutual ambitions but the timing for each may not be in synch. Eliminating the buyout may be a key indicator of a mutual agreement to tamp down mutual ambitions at this time.”

I agree, Iona did not want to pay him. They were already losing first round games prior to him and his salary commitment\demands

I would think with this quick ,great hire they (Iona)have a good chance to retain some of their players ,,on top of who Tobin can take with him to Iona .

In a business full of snakes, there are not many as slimy as one Rick Pitino. Iona knew what they were getting with that guy. And now anyone of value at Iona will be lacing them up for SJU next year. Tobin is a good coach and hiring him this fast is impressive (imagine Marist ever doing that? Me either)…but he’s gonna have his work cut out when the dust settles.
