So final Offseason tally -
(scholarships)
2023-24 Roster
(1) R-Sr Zaria DeMember-Shazer 6'0" (2) R-Sr Kiara Fisher 5'7" (3) R-Sr Erin Fox 6'1" (4) Sr Maeve Donnelly 6'5" (5) Jr. Catie Cunningham 5'11" (6) Jr. McKenna Rife 6'4" (7) So. Jackie Piddock 5'8" (8) So. Ciara Crocker 6'0" (9) So. Morgan Thompkins 5'11" (10)So Morgan Lee 6'5" (11)RSSo Lexie Tarul 5'11" (12) Fr Julia Corsentino 5'9" (13) Fr Kate Robbins 6'1"
So "technically" without a 14th - Erin has no scholarships available for 2024 Reality: Fox will not be offered a 5th year - so there is 1 Donnelly, Zaria, and Fisher will all graduate with at least 1 year availability - my guess is 2 of 3 leave for grad year - so probably 3 available.
WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN
Tim Murray needs to give her the 14th NOW - she HAS to be able to sign 2 kids minimum for 2024. She can't be held hostage waiting for the Seniors to decide if they will stay or go (Zaria/Fisher/Donnelly will at least be offered the covid year by Erin got to believe). So if 2 leave then we would be down to 12 and she would have 1 for next years portal.

Siena adds three more European kids, two from Spain and one from Hungary. I feel like these players always have higher floors, if not necessarily higher ceilings. They're more college hoops ready on Day 1.

Jabir has been given carte blanche to do whatever he wants/needs to do. All scholarships, can recruit in Europe w/o having to run EVERYTHING through AD (Giorgis had to get permission and run every foreign kid through our AD), Jabir has no issues running kids off..... he is going to be successful

Nomar, I agree. No covid year extension for Fox. I think a covid extension for Donnelly is a long shot. Outside of her freshman year at UMass she hasn’t been healthy. I’m sure we will see more of the same in 23-24. Would rather ED rolls the dice on a freshman or goes the portal route. Also, Robbins will be a sophomore in ‘24-‘25. Let her play and learn. Yea. Ki and Zar could hamstring the staff by procrastinating a decision to portal or not, so it’s up to Doughty to be in control of the situation and make sure that procrastination isn’t an option.

He provides how many scholarships are available by the school budget, and it's up to the coaches to manage the roster knowing the alottment of scholarships.

Under "Normal" circumstances I could agree with you - BUT this is NOT normal. This years senior class is last class that has free year so things will settle down after. So TM does need to get and give that 14th scholarship (at least have it available if needed).
It is tough enough for mid major coaches to compete nowadays as it is. So you want Erin to make the decision right now that Zaria, Fisher, and Donnelly will not be back? Or let season play out and have that conversation at end of season - maybe they want to stay? Maybe they won't know until April what they want to do, maybe they know in Jan that they won't be back - who knows.
She has 1 scholarship for next year - she needs 2 - so you offer the 14th. If all three stay you are at 14 scholarships for only one year. If 2 leave you are down to 12 scholarships and she will still have 1 for portal - or if only one leaves you are down to 13 and she doesn't have one for portal

Coach should not renew players who she feels won't help team going forward. You just said jabir does it. Others do too. Players no longer should get it both ways. Perform or no renewal. Blame your spoiled generation players

I don't want us to be that - I got no problem with Rife staying all four years as much as I would love her scholarship, I don't want to start pulling kids scholarships. (unless discipline reason)

(unless discipline reason) Ya but scholarships are granted by the year yet players have no problem leaving the program high and dry at any time, As per Barcello and the BU player. I have no problem not giving Rife 2 more years. We have had others that played very litte if at all for 4 years. Nice it you can do it but it is not fair to the Program or the Team.

I hate that kids quit or run or don't live up to commitments - but as adults I am not gonna say hey F them we will show them that, that is how world works. No we lead by example and say we will live up to our side of the agreement. Cutting kids will be used against us by schools that don't - you have no idea how much pulling the scholarship of the kid from Maryland hurt the men's program.
Fairfield says to kid we are both going after - hey we have never pulled a scholarship from kid Marist has pulled X #........ we lose

I think we have to act like no one will return for their 5th year and get recruits vs wait and see. I doubt they will all return so then we treat that as a one off at the time and go to battle with TM for the extra ship. He’s more likely to give an extra just for one year vs extra freshman/transfer who is unknown. It’s better than holding out and hoping they stay and don’t and need to scramble during the portal. They would be here anyways in any other time in history ha

If the staff wants them back for ‘24-‘25 they should offer the covid year commitment as soon as possible with a deadline for accept/decline. I’m with tlippy15. Waiting until April ‘24 for an answer is not in the long term best interest of the program. She is a brand new coach who got her job in an unconventional manner. IMO it’s not a smart move to be overly accommodating over a covid year. Coach and the staff control roster development, not the players. Didn’t we get a taste of this 2 years ago?

No loyalty, all me me,complain about coaches being loud, etc. Time for schools to say enough. They can't and shouldn't get it both ways. They wanted to get paid, they got it. They wanted to be able to transfer almost at will, they got it. It's a new world and colleges need to adjust. I used to argue all the time, "you can't not renew the scholly". I don't feel that way anymore.

Yeah but problem is you start kicking out kids who would stay or want to stay.... if they ar doing it right and standing by their commitment.. They get punished because the "more" talented kids pick up and move.
