Someone asked what do I want or expect.
What I want is the 2006-07 season to become the norm. I want a team that can beat Minnesota, W. Michigan, Old Dominion, Oklahoma St., and Richmond type teams year in and year out. Even the 2005-06 team that went 19-10 but had wins against St. John’s and St. Bonaventure. I want to be in the top 3 in the MAAC year in and year out. I want a team with an RPI ranking of 175 and better every year.
No I’m not going to be happy with baby steps, coming in 8th instead of 11th in the MAAC. We have seen all this before only to watch this team digress.
I get that people are happy with a 19 point win away from home against a 6-14 team. But that should be the norm and expected.
Remember when we thought we had Naofall Folahan – and someone comments “Damn, Martin ain't fooling around. This guy sounds like he could be the program changer. Our next Smits:).” – he ends up at Wagner – where he averaged 4 pts a game for his career.
Same year we get Casiem Drummond – “this guy is a game changer, the type of player we have been trying to get for years”
Then there was Menelik Watson that conjured up comments like “We'll be bigger, faster and better than we've seen ever across the entire roster. If we get picked 10th again this year the coaches have their heads in the sand. I think top 5 but no higher than 3rd this year. “
“I think Johnson and Price will have immediate impacts. Johnson can really shoot it from deep. Athletic and can handle. They've never had a guy like that. Price looks very poised. Both make foul shots.”
“First Martin brings in Drummond who was an academic liability from day one.
Now one of the star freshmen can't even meet the NCAA academic standard.”
“
Things are looking up. I kept seeing the score on the ticker and was hoping they'd steal one. Price and Rusin should be even better next year with some big guys down low. I still think Marist has one of the best if not the best rookie class.”
“I can't see anybody in the MAAC handling Watson's power. That will open things up for Price, Rusin, and hopefully Prescott. Also, Bauer can relax a little. I thought he had a pretty nice year. As long as Watson doesn't get in foul trouble, they will be much better.”
When Folahan decommits: “I really like the coaches and the school, however I am not sure it is the best fit for me to obtain my goals.” - our comment “Is the NBA is goal? Talk to Smits.”
Devin Price: Ive made some mistakes in my past but mark my words with the teammates i got wit me MARIST COLLEGE WILL HAVE A MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP N 2 YRS OR LESS. this school and this program will be great...
Man this one sounds like it was posted this year rather than in 2010
“The team was awful early. I was here with everyone else calling for change. I was starting to think they would not turn it around. The last five games have represented a change. The offense has been modified to include some more traditional sets. The rotation has been GREATLY improved.”
Still talking PG in 2010
“ Marist can win quite a few games at home and steal 2-3 wins on the road. I love the PG recruit coming in, LOVE MORTON.”
“We don't expect a great season, or even a 500 season. WE WILL BE THRILLED BY 7 MAAC wins. That is not asking too much. Get it done and you are on your way to having a bronze statue when you leave this fine college”
by 2011-12 we where talking “I don't disagree...just avoid the PIG is most important...when I say 6th or better I'm assuming fighting for top 3-4 acknowledging that 1 game or a tie breaker could mean the difference between 3rd and 5th or 4th and 6th. (2007-2008 we went 11-7 and finished 6th...I think we'd all take 11-7 next year).
We sound like we did 3 years ago when we where all talking about the new recruits in Rusin (former Mr. Basketball in Vermont), Prescott, Johnson, Alexis, Watson, and Drummond. We had just gotten rid of a decent player in Williams (asked to leave) and RJ Hall was coming off a pretty good Fr. season.
“Man, this is great. 2 more gems. Size and athleticism. Move over
Siena, there's gonna be a new sheriff in town!!!!”
“ I've seen many of these guys play in person over the last few years; Turner and Jones should be locks to start.”
“THIS is the type of news I love coming to this board for! We now have two former top-300 recruits on our roster (Matt Turner was 265, Enoh was 293)”
“The guards are light yrs better than what we've had. “
I have read it all, hell I even posted some of it, I even believed in it.
I could have put pages and pages together of us all saying same things over and over for 12 years about players and teams and how things are finally turning around. I get that people have to hold on to something at this point.
I came into this season pumped ready then I watched Marist play some of the worst basketball ever in the history of the school – including Martin’s 1 win season. The teams we lost to are pathetic is a nice word.
Sagl – has had a really good Freshman year – but right now hos play is all over the place, needs to be consistent. Need to know what we can expect every night from him…. Not maybe 3 points maybe 15.
Herasme – can shoot the three.
The team is young that is good, we have no recruits yet for 2020, Im gonna wait until Enoh plays a game before I believe (Drummond, Turner).
I am just not going to jump up and down over a win at Niagara – the losses to Columbia, St. Peter’s, the Citadel, UNH, and Bethune-Cookman are still in the back of my mind.
The MAAC has 7 teams at 250 RPI + I know that after all these years just winning games in the MAAC should be enough but it just isn’t for me, when the MAAC is just that bad.
I want to compete against CAA, Horizon, even Conf USA teams – I just do.
