Marist's game, scheduled for 1:30, delayed because Fairfield/Monmouth is in the 13th inning. I don't really follow softball, so maybe this isn't that unusual, but both starters are still pitching in a 2-2 game. Not quite Marichal beating Spahn 1-0 on a Mays HR in the last of the 16th, where both starters went all the way, but. . .

Oh Starter, but it is typical. On tournament weekends some pitchers go 5 games. In what is known as "The Game", perhaps the greatest softball game ever played, the 1976 World Championship in New Zealand, US vs New Zealand. Ty Stofflet (US) lefty, and Kevin Herlehy righty arguably the 2 best pitchers that ever played the game. Stofflet had a perfect game until he hit a batter in the 18th inning. Stofflet then drove in the winning in the 20th inning while striking out 40! (these were world class hitters, not guys fron Joe's Bar and Grill). Herlehy struck out 32. By the way Stofflet was not the MVP. I know as I was the first baseman.

was it Casey that said "oh them bases on balls". No defense for a walk. Bats kind of quieted down too. Ladies put in a great effort and an especially long day. Made some great plays.

I think it was Frankie Frisch. I was thinking the same exact thing. Walking the first two put them in a hole. Great effort though..

This local kid is a great 2018 pickup for Marist. She fell in love with Marist early on in the recruiting process. i would be shocked if she doesn't contribute immediately. Her fastball hits 65mph on the radar gun. Calista Phippin

Latest accolades from the Albany Times Union for Marist softball signee Calista Phippen.....
Phippen dominates in May
Ichabod Crane pitcher wins monthly award for second straight time
Calista Phippen opened May by tossing a no-hitter against Cobleskill and ended a 13-game slate leading the Ichabod Crane softball team to its third Section II Class B title since 2015.
In between those two outings, the Marist-bound senior pitcher completely dominated the competition.
Phippen went 12-1 during May — the loss coming when two unearned scored in the eighth inning against Oneida — with 210 strikeouts over 88 innings. She tossed two no-hitters and two perfect games, allowing two earned runs during the month.
For her efforts, Phippen has been selected as the Times Union Female Athlete of the Month for May. The senior also earned the award in April.
Phippen, a three-time Times Union small-school first-team all-star selection, tossed nine shutouts — including four straight to open the month. She fired a one-hitter with 21 strikeouts in a 3-0 decision over Archbishop Molloy on May 5. Later that day, Phippen allowed only two hits and struck out 19 in the 2-1 setback against Oneida. Because it was a tournament, the teams employed the international tiebreaking rule — placing a runner on second base to open an inning — in the eighth and the Riders committed an error with two outs that allowed both runs to score.
In her next game, Phippen produced a perfect game with 16 strikeouts as Ichabod Crane edged rival Cohoes 1-0.
After the game, Phippen said, “I am going to keep striving to do better. Nothing is possible without having great teammates behind me and the support they give me.”
Two days after the Cohoes win, Phippen delivered another perfect game in a 27-0 triumph over Catholic Central. She also added another no-hitter in a 12-0 victory against Bishop Gibbons in the Class B quarterfinals.
Monday, Phippen was selected as the New York State Gatorade Player of the Year in softball for the second straight year.
The Riders (20-1) compete Saturday in the Class B state semifinals vs. Olean at Moreau Rec. Phippen is looking to lead Ichabod Crane to its second state championship as she helped guide the 2015 squad to the title.
For her career, Phippen has recorded 1,160 strikeouts. She looks to add two more wins to her incredible scholastic resume Saturday.
