Villanova wasn’t a renown academic institution prior to winning championship over Georgetown. Winning in sports was a springboard. After BC beat ND on Fluties miracle pass applications soared. Winning in sports is very important to driving institutional success

I was just joking around - your point was well taken we should be able to do more. No worries, but you make a decent point on the larger issue of getting "good recruits" to Poughkeepsie. It's an issue for all programs.

I hate to say this but the reality is football to Marist is nothing more than admissions tool. Having a football program is extremely important for admissions, it helps balance out the female and male population at Marist. If the NCAA allow them to stay as a D3 football program like it was when I was there, then they would still be D3 For the most part this conference was created by schools that didn't want to spend money on scholarships. If D3 were possible, I think it would be a good decision.

If D3 was an option we would be there - in football ONLY. I went to Marist 86-90 and that is how it was set up - all DI except football. NCAA forced DI schools to have all same level teams.

I disagree on D3, Nomar forgive me! FCS level keeps my interest in the program D3 would not, I’m sure that applies to many people. I wish the school would put more of a premium on winning. Invest the $$$ to compete with USD do what is necessary to compete with Siena, Iona and Monmouth at MBB. Other academic institutions have found a way to balance both. Right now we are a laughingstock at MBB and football is stuck in neutral. I don’t profess to know what each sport needs $$$ or academic standards. Etc. I do know what we are doing isn’t working from a fan/alumni standpoint

We don't disagree - Id much rather follow us playing Davidson, Dayton, G-Town, etc.... then Union, St. John's Fisher, CW Post etc as in 1988. I was just saying the college would be happy in DIII - that tells you how much money they plan on putting into the program

My preference is to stay DI - FCS but with a renewed commitment (and new staff).

I'm confused ..D3 is NOT an option, getting rid of football is BUT even in it's current form it is good for Admissions.
Or are you talking about taking the entire college down to DIII?

The other thing is as a college there is so much going on, a lot of it will come out over the next 6 months. That it will really change the landscape of the college itself.
I honestly don't think most of us on the board truly understand how far down Athletics is in the schools priority

As frustrating as it is for us fans of the Athletic teams the administration is making great strides on the academic side without on court/field success in MBB and football. Although it won’t stop me from complaining about those sports.

FWIW - on one of the other FB boards there was talk of the NCAA relooking at the Dayton rule. Pure speculation but if it were to be changed, it would pose some real questions for the FB program.

www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/78wjyh/presbyterian_college_big_south_to_vote_on/There are a couple great points through out that thread "If PC were to drop scholarships, they'd look to join the non-scholarship Pioneer League, which is a D1 FCS league comprised of Division 1 schools who want to remain in D1 for other sports like basketball without having to drop football entirely. The NCAA doesn't allow football to be in one division while the rest of your sports are in another, so the Pioneer league lets D1 schools essentially play D3 football within D1. Members include Butler (Big East), Dayton (A10), San Diego (WCC), Valparaiso (MVC), and others."And more importantly why we can not offer scholarships - we would have to offset Title IX Ky Snyder, our old AD, was against the idea for both the monetary reasons (about $9 million to crossover) and Title IX saying: "The reason it’s so large is it’s not just doing it for football. Title IX comes into play, so you’ve got to do scholarships on the women’s side as well. In order to get to that number of scholarships, then you have to have the number of sports available to do that. For us, once we crossed the threshold of 42 scholarships, we would then have to start adding women’s sports on top of it."

You're talking about a massive budget increase to bring FB up to a competitive level and fund a field hockey team.

You're talking about a massive budget increase to bring FB up to a competitive level and fund a field hockey team. I've provided these numbers before and it would be a good exercise to refresh them but I don't think more $$$$ is the answer. Don't get me wrong, we could use more but fundamentally our problem is at the coaching level. Old FY2012 numbers but ... and this was before the Million $$ Challenge (Campbell is out of PFL in a year). 110 University of San Diego CA $1,269,465 111 Campbell University NC $1,143,155 112 Jacksonville University FL $1,126,146 114 University of Dayton OH $975,237 115 Morehead State University KY $928,306 116 Valparaiso University IN $879,762 117 Drake University IA $876,039 118 Marist College NY $870,416 119 Davidson College NC $790,295 120 Butler University IN $648,837
