In reading all their threads it is very similar to us - the success of the schools president and AD is based 100% on the basketball program. After reading all those threads no one actually put together any thoughts on how to improve the basketball program outside of firing coach.
Same with us, for years we complained that basketball isn't successful because we can't get transfers or JUCOS - we know that isn't true. We complain that we don't know how to hire a coach (but I would argue if you just go purely by the resumes we would be happy to hire any one of them again)
1) Martin - played at Monmouth, knows the NE for recruiting purposes, was an assistant at Manhattan, UMass, Drexel, St. John's and Memphis coming off a final four appearance of which he was the main recruiter. (bring me a similar resume and I am all over it again.
2) Bower - Asst Coach at Marist 10 years, was a GM and HC in the NBA, was Director of personal and a scout for a couple NBA teams - drafting the likes of David West, J. R. Smith, Chris Paul, Darren Collison and Marcus Thornton - seems like a good gamble for a Mid-Major looking to get back in the game. He failed miserably as far as recruiting - but that is easy in hindsight.
3) Maker - 20 years as a DI assistant coach including places like West Virgina and Creighton, then as a HC DIII compiles a 147-32 record and 4 final four appearances - again bring me another resume like that and I am seriously thinking about hiring him.
We so quickly want to blame the AD - these guys were vetted by a number of people and came with great references from some of the greatest basketball minds and coaches out there.
Some people here think that we can move on from a guy like Maker and come up with another HC with better resume? I would love to know who those people are.
This program has had zero stability, and zero success for over a decade and THAT is what has destroyed this program, THAT is why good ball players will not have Marist as a top choice. It isn't that they don't like the school or the staff - it is that they don't believe he will be here 4 years - hence they do not believe that the program will turn itself around.
In all of our threads no one has ever been able to put together a real game plan as to how this program can turn itself around.
Sure we can say we need new arena - and if someone is willing to donate $85M towards it I am sure Marist will be happy to accommodate.
Sure we can say we need to lower our academic standards and let anyone who can really play basketball in - but that too is not realistic and never gonna happen no matter WHO the coach is.
Sure we can look at great basketball players who might have had some disciplinary problems
We are allowed transfers and JUCOs and the academic standards for incoming basketball players are already lower then the "normal" student trying to get into Marist.
I do not know what type of campus and academic growth the President of Niagara has done the last decade - but I do know what has happened at Marist and to say Dr. Murray wasn't the greatest thing to happen to this college would be an understatement. Also when you actually find out what is happening on campus and the direction of the college you will truly understand how far down basketball is on their agenda. They are all about being a place of higher learning - and when it is all said and done we then might be in a position for a Patriot League invite.

Great post nomar, what gets me is the BS we hear that Marist is dedicated to getting the MBB Program a M.A.A.C, championship, I don't see it.
My game plan to turn this thing around would be, aim high with recruiting , and target transfers and JUCOs until the program can get stabilized.

Nomar, good post. First - do not fire the coach. You are correct we need stability. Second - I assume that we really don't recognise great MBB players (note recent suspension) should have lost scholarship. Third - hire a recruiter assistant with a proven record to work with HC Fourth - It appears to me that his system doesn't work with the type of players we can attract. Listen to our assistant coach's input. Fifth - Stress defence = at least if we are cold shooting a good defence should keep it closer.
I may be all wet but these are my thoughts.

agree with 1
2 - little confused - if we are talking about Parker - i have no problem giving a kid a second chance - they are college kids a lord knows I had plenty of "fun" when at Marist - ya know thinks like using a fake ID to get into a bar. But he needs to learn from that and play like he did in the MAAC championship game. Also there is no third chance
3 - Yankee has brought this up as well and I agree. Although I think the staff are pretty good recruiters and I am afraid that getting the good players to commit goes deeper then bringing on another recruiter... but can't hurt to try
4/5 seem to go together - if we are recruiting shooters who can't shoot that is an issue, and I do not know if Maker can change his entire coaching philosophy to defense.
