This article has popped up on a couple of MAAC message boards. Reaction ranges from end of the world stuff to "we will just raid lower D1's and D2 programs of their good players then....." I also linked another article by a writer fully in support of the idea. The issue, is, of course, total "free agency" by "student-athletes" will turn the Mids into defacto farm clubs for so called power conferences. Impact of Eliminating the Sit-Out YearLearning to embrace the coming mid-major farm systemIntriguing stuff. Is free agency just compensation to a "student athlete" for not being paid? Should a school who plucks a player off another schools roster have to pay compensation? Kind of like Marist's argument in the Brady case? Maybe pay the school back for the former "student-athletes" full cost of attendance for the prior year of semester? How long until Congress starts to question whether billion dollar sports programs at public and private universities that are barely indistinguishable from for profit sports leagues deserve to remain classified as not-for-profit. There are millions of potential tax dollars changing hand in College sports. I would need a city full of fingers and toes to count the number of times fans defended running a player off or siting a tournament at a certain venue based on attendance of the host team with the phrase..."well it a business you know."
