Hey Rick - with all the great players, soccer has had - why haven't they found more success? Why try to convince the best player to move on? Why not have him try to bring a MAAC Championship to Marist? Why not enjoy have him enjoy 2 more years of college (those years never happen again)?
If Allen is that good - he can wait. Imagine if he quits goes Pro and finds out he just isn't ready .... then what? Unless Arsenal or MU are calling - stay win MAAC have fun with your friends !!!!

Rick - I think Centerfield does an amazing job on covering Marist sports - better then the local newspaper in my opinion.

Imagine if he quits goes Pro and finds out he just isn't ready .... then what? Unless Arsenal or MU are calling - stay win MAAC have fun with your friends !!!! Hi Nomar. First, soccer has had some great players come in the program like Gavilanes and Harr, but there is a major gap between them and the rest of the team. If you look at the top 20 players in the MAAC right now, Gavilanes is either number one or two, right there with Quinnipiac's Eamon Whelan. However, Marist's second best player, Samad Bounthong, might not even be on that list and if he is - it's probably somewhere between 17-20. Because of the talent gap, it affects the way the team plays - force feeding the ball to Gavilanes via direct play and bypassing the midfield. This is really easy to defend and is part of the reason they have not found more success. While you say those 2 years at college may never happen again and he should enjoy them, others may say those are two years he will never get back in terms of developing his game. In soccer, you stop developing at around the age 23 - normally. He is already two years behind in terms of development compared to those that are playing professional right now and if he is to wait until he is 22(senior) that would be a four-year gap. He is basically done developing at that point and it's already too late to become the best possible player he could have been. The best way I can describe the development difference between pro and college soccer is the lengths of the season. Pro-teams are playing a 10-month season while college only has a three to four-month season. That's a massive difference and I'm not even going to get into the weeds of the level of competition, coaching, and facilities. You're right, Gavilanes will probably never play for Arsenal or Manchester United, but just him getting to the MLS or getting valuable minutes on a USL team would not only be a great achievement for him, but also for Marist soccer as a result. Coach Viggiano would be able to tell recruits "look at that kid, he made it - if you come here you have the chance to do the same," and so while you might want to be selfish for wanting him to stay, understandable, it would help out the program immensely if he did make it professionally in the long run.
