Looks like Memphis is going to deal with what Marist did - a coach leaving and the cupboard being left bare. With Calipari leaving for Kentucky all 3 of Memphis prized recruits going to re open thier recruiting. Reggie Evens - is declaring for the draft DeMarcus Cousins (a top 5 recruit) - never signed an loi Xavier Henry & John Wall - both had agreements in place that if Calipari left they would be released. Kentucky has used all three of its scholarships for next year - will Calipari honor those? Is is on the phone to all the old Memphis recruits today getting them to come to Kentucky? Can we play Memphis agian next year might have better shot? If he does take some of those recruits to Kentucky - do we put him in the Brady catigory? ?

The agreement if he leaves that they are released is just as bad as not having them sign the LOI in my opinion. Surprised the university agreed to that situation. However, at least Calipari liked being at Memphis and talked them up. Brady was just a whiny little sour, no smiling primadonna when he was here. Never gave the impression he wanted to be here. Calipari, while a snake, is a snake that gave his all to Memphis.

This post wasnt to try to put Calipari in the same catagory as Brady - it is more curiosity. Going from Memphis to Kentucky isnt the same as Marist to JMU.
Memphis while a national power is Conf USA - none of the other teams in the conference can compete in the SEC. Where as I'd put the top teams from the MAAC up against any team in the CAA and they would compete and win.
The real similarities are that the players whom he recruited for Memphis CAN play in the SEC and succeed. Just like last years Marist recruits excelled in the CAA.
I have no issue with going to play for a certian coach more then the school that happens all the time. My biggest issue was that Brady was on the phone "recruiting" the Marist players for JMU with no loyalty to the college that gave him his first chance. And that is what I am curious to see if Calipari will do the same - before I judge.
The players who will not honor the loi's all looked a other schools - none of them being Kentucky. So if they where torn between say Kansas and Memphis and Calipari was the diffence and now feel that Kansas is a better fit - I'm good with that. Same reason I wish Gavin all the success at VCU - he was loyal to the "other school" who recruited him hard.

If the school signed off on the arrangement with the recruits then how can you hold the coach totally responsible? Despite the fact that Calipari already had a rep as a win at all costs guy and nothing would surprise me, it sounds like this the parties had an agreement in place ahead of time. Nomar33 is spot on regarding the difference between Brady and Cal. One was above board with their employer, the other wasn't.

I wonder what kind of year Jay would have had at Marist under Martin given his deficiencies as a ball handler. We all agree he would have gotten a ton of open looks from deep range, but how much would he have struggled with the drive and dish requirements. I seem to remember he had real problems late in his freshman year after Louis went down and Jay got more defensive attention.
Hope he has a great career at VCU. He was a real bright spot for Marist that year.

He is smart, however, so he won't get caught if he crosses a line or two.
