Yes it needs to start today at least for staff......
The future of Marist Women’s Basketball
We had an unbelievable run but that was under an entirely different set of rules, we are in that area where we need to adapt or die.
Yes, I am one of those people who believes that today’s players are very different and coddled – in the past it was always about teamwork, being a good teammate, supporting each other, today it is “the player has to do what is best for them” – you read this everywhere, look no further then FSU in Bowl game. The rules have made it easy to quit if things aren’t going your way. Please do not compare players to coaches. “Coaches can leave whenever they want” – well coaches can also get FIRED.
Mid-Majors are no longer Cinderella Stories they are recruiting grounds.
What Marist must do to help Marist Women succeed:
1) Give them full allotment of scholarships.
2) Find NIL $
3) Look overseas!
4) Invest in arena.
What Erin needs to do:
She said it during press conference - needs to be tougher and that also means making tough decisions
She might need to look at staff - and see where can we bring in someone who can recruit in todays environment.
Have the tough conversation with players that her goal is to recruit over them, if she feels they can't be developed
I can't stress the overseas aspect enough - we don't compete with NIL for those players
She needs figure out how to recruit outside a 150 mile radius of Marist, have relied too much on NY/NJ area and he has blown up in her face.
What the NCAA can do:
If kids can transfer anytime and as many times as they want, then coaches should be able to “fire” a kid and pull scholarship without cause. This would allow coaches to free up scholarships from kids who just didn’t work out.
Erin can recruit the next Rachel Fitz, but there is no way she can keep her under today’s rules – there would be some school with fashion who would be able to also give her $$.
2024-25 Roster Scenarios
Red - Players Moving On
Gold - Players on Roster who do not play
Black - In rotation *projected starter
Blue - No idea role, if they will stay, or if they will get real PT
M. Donnelly & E. Fox are alumni – E. Fox does have year of eligibility left – maybe she can play one more year at a D3 (I’d love to see her get PT somewhere)
Grad - PG - K. Fisher 5’7” – graduates – at this point it is time to move on, she deserves chance to play on winning team and Marist needs scholarship to move forward.
Grad - F – Z. Shazer 6’1” - graduates – at this point it is time to move on, she deserves chance to play on winning team and Marist needs scholarship to move forward
(These 2 are the most talented players on roster but the offense never flowed when they were in, are we going to find same talent in portal? Don't know but maybe we find 2 who are better fits for what we run)
Sr. C – M. Rife 6’3” – will graduate from Marist, she has done everything the staff has asked but has just never made it on the court.
* Sr. G/SF – C. Cunningham 5’11”
The Good: When healthy she is a very good player and a great rebounder, had 9 games with double digit RBs, shot .703 from the free throw line. Averaged 6.2 ppg
The Bad: She for the most part stayed healthy but need her to be 100% for next year. He .391 FG % needs to improve, .291 from 3pt range
Outlook: Last year Zaria took 2x as many shots as ANYONE else on team, so Cunningham is going to get more chances and can be a very solid 3. She is going to be our 1 true Senior leader and believe she is built for that. She is easily the toughest player we have - need more toughness from rest of group.
*Jr. C - M. Lee 6’4” –
The Good: If her last 8 games are an indicator of what we got then we are going to be in pretty good shape at the 5 - last 8: 15 ppg, .450 FG% 6.8 rpg. She was out best 3pt shooter @ .358 3pt%, also shot .706 from FT.
The Bad: The beginning of season, inability to be able to stay on court most of the season.
Outlook: I was critical of Lee at beginning of the year with how I perceived her showing up at Marist out of shape - you look at her photo of when we offered and when she arrived at Marist and there was a big difference, but at same time the girl that ended the season was not the girl who started season - you can see how hard she has worked to get back in shape if that continues over summer she can really be a force next year. Remember Lee had offerers from likes of Ole Miss, West Virginia, Seton Hall....
Jr. SG – L. Tarul 5’11”
The Good: I wish there was more I could put here, she averaged 7.3 ppg and shot .750 from FT line. There was a 5 game stretch - Cornell to first Mount game where she shot 11/20 from 3 and I thought her we go, but that was short lived.
The Bad: She didn't shoot the three well at all - .319 while taking 163 attempts - that is a lot of clanks. She was slow on D inability to cover a player one-on-one, better in the zone.
Outlook: Is that Tarul we saw in 5 games this year in there or was that an aberration? This was her first year back from injury. Can she get back to what she was coming out of HS, can she improve footwork and get a consistent stroke? All question marks
Jr. PG – J. Piddock 5’8” –
The Good: Gives you minutes, you know what you are going to get when she is in - nothing more nothing less. She was 3rd on team in AsstsAgain I wish I could point to something she does really really well just can't
The Bad: TOs - she was 2nd behind Zaria, .333 FG% and .303 3pt% isn't going to get you minutes
Outlook: Piddock scored 3000 pts in HS - you have to ask yourself how? Right now she is the only true PG on roster (again I am assuming Fisher is moving on), so I should have * next to her name but got to believe the staff will be scrubbing portal for one.
Jr. SG – M. Tompkins 5’11’ –
The Good: She made it back from injury
The Bad: She came back from injury - this might have been a good year to RS and get back into basketball shape. She did nothing well - .261 FG%, .000 3pt% and .667 FT% - all the athleticism we saw last year was not there this year
Outlook: She might be a candidate to transfer, has to know staff is going to look to recruit over her. (If she loves Marist, the education, and her friends here and stays - so be it. Those 3 things are what college SHOULD be about NOT NIL $ - yeah not talking NIL when talking Tompkins) Hopefully she can get back what she lost to injury over summer.
* Jr. F – C. Croker 6’0” -
The Good: You saw a different player last 6 games of year and that is one we hope to see all of next year 8 ppg and shot .500 FG%. while grabbing 5 rpg. She also shot .737 from the FT line
The Bad: Foul Trouble - she loved it, picked up fouls in bunches at times. We don't have depth to afford a starter getting in foul trouble
Outlook: She has improved and if you really watch her and Lee on court together at end of year - they played well as a tandem, more of that. She is also going to be one of the upper class leaders, like everyone needs more toughness and better D
So SG – J. Corsentino 5’7” -
The Good: From Penn game to Lehigh game we were all worried that UConn was going to poach her in offseason - in that 3 game stretch avg 16ppg and shoot .700 from 3 - not much went right after that. Was .736 from FT line for year
The Bad: Rest of the year - ended up shooting .309 from 3pt land - need more from your 3 point shooter.
Outlook: She is an interesting one, she was only a Freshman and we have seen a sophomore jump through out years. She never lost confidence in taking a shot - and there is defiantly an adjustment from 3pt line to college now - also the staff just brought in 2 more players that appear to take up same spot on the floor as Corsentino
So. F/C K. Robbins 6’2” –
The Good: Incomplete
The Bad: On a team with only 6 wins the staff didn't see enough from her in practice to give her any real minutes in games - that is a concern
Outlook: No idea
This is where we start to rebuild with incoming Freshman - this is where the hope lays
* Fr. CG D. Williamsen 5'8" -
The Recruiting Battle: "She also considered offers from UTEP, Manhattan College, Sacred Heart, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and others."
Reason for Hope:
Fr. CG C. Escanillas 5'10" -
The Recruiting Battle: Columbia, UNC-Ashville, Manhattan, Navy, FDU
Reason for Hope:
Projected Roster as of Mar 13th 2024 - this will change probably often
PG - J. Piddock, J.Corsentino, D. Williamsen
SG - D. Williamsen, J. Corsentino, C. Escanillas, L. Tarul, M. Thompkins (yeah my guess is Erin doesn't have Tarul this far down on depth chart but I do)
SF - C. Cunningham, C. Croker, C. Escanillas
F - C. Croker, K. Robbins
C - M. Lee, M. Rife
Following the Portal:
Gr - Benna McDonald 6'3" C - Natick (MA) Yale - 9.2 ppg
Gr. - Maranda Nyborg 6'3" C - 2 years eligibility left - Bethel (CT) - 4.2 ppg - Red Shirted 22-23 season
Gr - Makayla Andrews 5'10" SF - Neptune (NJ) - avg 13.2 ppg but is not a solution to perimeter shooting @ .225 from 3pt land.
So. - Kate Peek 5’9" G - Poughkeepsie NY - 1.9 ppg -

The Recruiting Battle: "She also considered offers from UTEP, Manhattan College, Sacred Heart, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and others."
Reason for Hope:
- "St. Joseph-by-the-Sea’s Danielle Williamsen was tabbed the AA division’s Player of the Year"
- "Danielle Williamsen, 5'8" SG, St. Joseph by the Sea-CHSAA, Jr. 22.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg"
- "Williamsen is a shooting guard that can score the ball in bunches. She has a variety of scoring moves that consistently keeps the defense at her mercy. In both half court and transition Williamsen is a knockdown shooter both from beyond the arc and at mid-range. Her quick release and ability to move well without the ball result in her getting open for her shot on the perimeter often. She also has the ability to get all the way to the basket and finish through contact.
Fr. CG C. Escanillas 5'10" -
The Recruiting Battle: Columbia, UNC-Ashville, Manhattan, Navy, FDU
Reason for Hope:
- "Then finally all the Division One talent. It can be real easy to get lost at Rutgers Prep. Chloe Escanillas has played with and against the best of the best."
- "When you play at Rutgers Prep there is not a lot of shots to go around when you name is CHLOE. The hype machine is not in full overdrive for you. Everything you get is a grind. You don’t get to pad your stats or get those extra minutes in blow out games" This is almost the exact situation when wee recruited Rebekah Hand, I watched her AAU team play here i Atlanta and she was not part of the offense - they had the #1 recruit on team, believe she wound up at Baylor.
- Won State Title: "Chloe Escanillas also had three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points."
Projected Roster as of Mar 13th 2024 - this will change probably often
