Was at the game. Good first half after a very bad first couple of minutes. Horrible second half. Marist just does not have the horses to compete against the best teams in the MAAC. It's been a very tough season but there is hope on the horizon. Mike Maker really does know how to teach basketball, coach. As I've said previously I notice improvement in almost every aspect of each players game. The BIG exception last night was their absolutely awful free throw shooting.
A few random thoughts: I think Coil is being held back so they can red shirt him and get a 5th year out of him. OR they want him to leave. You choose.
I stopped listening to the radio broadcasts a long time ago because Ed Weir is awful.
I cannot attend the St. Peter's game Friday night so I hope last night was the last night I have to endure the painful announcer, and his Chavaughnnnnnnn Leeeeewwwwwwiiiiiissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! In addition to the administration saying goodbye to Ed Weir they should also find a new in game announcer. To the best of my recall, the Men have not had a winning season since he's been behind the mike.

Maker continues to get a pass from the board and I am not sure why...
Yes, there has been improvement in individual players games however that is not showing in the win/loss column. One of Maker's attributes is supposed to be his "experience" in pressure games going to D3 final fours. One would expect that to translate into making in-game adjustments when a opponent is making their run in the 2nd half. Game after game we have a slight lead at halftime and continuously get outperformed the 2nd half. Where are the adjustments? The timely play that halts the momentum shift?
Maker may be a teacher however in-game coaching ability has to be questioned at this point based upon what we are witnessing.

Maker is our coach for a long time. I suggest you start supporting him.
I cringe to think of where we will be if he is not successful.

I, as a rule, don't blindly support anyone and will continue to critique based upon observations. Granted my observations may be wrong or skewed but that's another story. If he isn't successful, life goes on. There are a lot of coaches who could get us 5 wins in a season. So far it is more hope than evidence that things will get better.

As for Coil ..Usually the team announces that the player will red shirt ...A rule that i believe just changed a few years ago was that a team must honor 4 years of scholarship when offering a d-1 athletic scholarship ..used to be year to year ..although most players were given the full 4 as it didn't look good for prospective athletes coming in if others were basically getting cut from the team .

You state "Yes there has been some improvement in individual players". Mike Maker is playing with someone else's players. Not quite the same as playing with someone else's money. LOL Did it ever dawn on you that due to the weak roster, the 8 players who get the majority of playing time are exhausted by the time they get to the end of the game? Did it ever dawn on you that Marist does not have many high quality D1 players on it's roster? Right now it has but 2 top quality MAAC players and one is playing his final few games. In order to make "The timely play that halts the momentum shift" you need players who can make that timely play! How about you wait until Mike Maker has had a chance to recruit at least one player before you start judging his win/loss record? How about being set back this season due to injuries to two of the top 6 players for the first half of the season and for a short while three of the top 6 players? . Look a coach does not get to the DIII championships without knowing how to coach during a game, how to make in-game adjustment, no matter what you witnessed so far this season. I sit behind the bench during home games and I see them making adjustments all game long. In fact last night I saw Marist press for the first time this season. I believe the guys are still learning the Maker way of playing college basketball. If you believe this transformation would take one season, wrong! Geez give the guy a little slack, give him a chance.

Ken hits it right on the head. The lack of skill prohibits Maker from adjusting too much. What is going to adjust to? The team only does a couple things well (running the fast break and dribble drives from Hart and Lewis) Teams tend to pack the lane on the dribble drives to take that away and the horrendous rebounding hinders the fast break ability.
I feel we've seen a noticeable increase in open three's due to the Maker offense but as illustrated in my other post, the team can't knock those shots down. They occasional run a nice backdoor but the guys finishing arent a given to complete the layup/dunk. Even Lawrence who looks all NBA on unimpeded dunks becomes Mr softy pants whenever he gets even a whiff of contact going to the rim in traffic.
Often Lewis' wild drive to the rim are the teams best offense and when that's not going well it's up to Mr. Hart to make something happen. When they both have an off night (like the last two games) it's turnover, missed shot, forced missed shot, turnover, turnover, turnover, missed shot, etc, etc, etc. Just not sure anyone could get more out of this group no matter what Maker tries to run.

i see everyone played but Coil ,,something's going on with that ,, coach is trying to get him to transfer obviously..that goes for him not playing in blowout losses or wins either..a little unusual to say the least .not playing a minute all year.. I don't think Maker is the type to embarrass a kid into transferring. I think either he is going for the red shirt so he can be a freshman again next year or he simply is not ready. If the redshirt is in play, I think that is it.

While I don't agree with you on Maker yet, I do agree with not blindly supporting anyone. For example, I am on record saying I CANT STAND the protection we are giving him by blasting the talent level of the young kids. He doesn't need it, and he hasn't asked for it. However, I have seen noticeable improvement over the year with the players and the offense is really getting good shot oppurtunities.

This PA announcer was their during the Jordan era. Listen to 07 game against Siena. That was him. He came at the tail end of the Sean Kennedy era. I'll admit, I like him other than the C Lewis thing. Probably because it sounds stupid hearing that when they're down 15 at home..
I love Maker. They are at a disadvantage though. Manhattan has Andujar. Iona has Laury. We have skinny guys at 6'5.. Most of our guys aren't well rounded players. I'm talking about the upperclassmen , other than the big 2.

Most MAAC teams wouldn't take Laury. That is not just a Marist thing Ggaff. Great job by Iona getting him through, but that is an extreme case.
