Well the 2022-23 Season has started - the summer camps, the bonding, the cultural change is all happening now .....
Roster:
PG: K. Fisher (Jr)
PG/SG: J. Piddock (Fr)
PG/SG: K. Krick (Grad)
SG: M. Tompkins (Fr)
SG: J. Bonilla (Sr.)
SF: C. Cunningham (So.)
SF: C. Croker (Fr.)
F: Z. Shazer (Jr.)
F: E. Fox (Jr.)
C/F: S. Bailey (Sr.)
C: M. Donnelly (RSr. 3yrs eligibility left)
C: M. Rife (So.)
That should make Tim happy only 12 scholarships used - 3 less then what Quinnipiac will be using this year - that is an issue.
It might not sound like a lot but adding Maeve alone changes they dynamic of team and outlook - of course we have to go under assumption that it is the Maeve of UMass freshman year healthy.
We talked about the lack of chemistry and the disruptive culture of the 2021-22 roster a bunch last year (**this part might very much upset people as I will be calling out players who are YES young women), but it is important to understand just how bad the culture was last year and how it played a part in the lack of success on court.
Annabel and Wax didn't want to be here, you could see it, and they let team mates know it - that wore on them
Kennedy's transfer wasn't a women's basketball issue it was a Marist culture issue - being a more diverse inclusive campus has been an uphill battle for Marist and changing its perception of being a predominantly white school has not been successful. She just was not comfortable on campus.
So is the incoming Freshman, a 6'5" true center, a healthy Fisher, and a unified locker room enough to change the results of this team?
First - the culture - this is going to be up to player and captains to all agree that what happened last year won't happen again, that everyone will have everyones backs, that they will listen to staff, and they will not create clicks. Getting the freshman to feel comfortable and confident the moment they step on campus is going to be vital.
*What IS missing is a pure 3pt proven sharpshooter - and unfortunately the staff was unable to real one in from portal.
More in depth look at roster:
PG K. Fisher - when she is healthy, she averaged 12.6 ppg had 7 games over 15 ppg, was one of the quickest guards in the MAAC. She can absolutely be an ALL-MAAC player, she needs to open up her tunnel vision and get others involved and not just look to Zaria every time down court.
PG/SG J. Piddock - heard from many coaches and reporters that this one was a steal - so I am projecting ALL-MAAC Rookie team, 24ppg, 7.4 rpg, .387 3pt shooting (The HS 3 point line is closer then college so moving forward it might take shooters more time to adjust to the college 3pt line - for the life of me I have no idea why this changed)
PG/SG K. Krick - her last 10 games she was our best player - 11.1 ppg, .321 3pt, and a .455 FG % - she will be in rotation for min and most likely starter early in season
SG M. Tompkins - she too comes to Marist with big hype - POY 20 ppg, 10.2 rpg (can not find her 3pt shoot %), like Piddock we will need her to play above her Freshman status
SG J. Bonilla - she came out of gate last year with a 16 point effort but ended year shooting .209 from 3pt - we have seen enough of her to know that she is nothing more than a bench player, it will be her senior leadership that will be an asset.
SF C. Cunningham - man we need a Soph jump from her, she didn't blow our socks off last year (but then again who did?) but she did shoot .405% FG - more aggressiveness, more confidence. The 3 might be our most unknown position as I don't see a plug and play player on roster.
SF C. Croker - she is physical and strong - we don't have a banger on this team - she has the build of Emma O'Connor but thinking she will play like Emma is a real stretch (at least Freshman year)
F Z. Shazer - I am truly under the belief that the loss of Fischer along with living with 2 players who didn't want to play for Marist weighed on Zaria more than anyone else. With Fisher back and hopefully a new outlook towards this team being an upper classman re-invigorates Zaria - when one she is one of the most dynamic and unstoppable players in MAAC (also a candidate for ALL-MAAC player) Zaria playing to her potential will easily take Marist to the top half of MAAC
F E. Fox - Her PT will come at the 4 - she never really hurt us when in game but she also never really changed the flow, can she ever get to potential that I though she could be when signed at Marist? Not sure the make up of this roster will let us find out. If there is another level to her game that the staff can bring out this year - Zaria can slide to 3 at times
C S. Bailey - she will get first crack at starting, Sam is by far the fastest big, runs floor well, and is physical but at times it just seems that she is not comfortable at the 5, defensively she is good but there was no one on roster that was ever able to help her out on weakside D
C M. Donnelly - a true Center at 6'5" will give other teams 2nd thoughts about coming into paint, shot blocker and rebounder (she would make up for loss of Wiemar last year - again assuming she is healthy) - she shot .467 FG% freshman year at UMass with 78 blocks - fills massive hole in roster
C M. Rife - can't say much, didn't even see a small spark that would make me think there is more there, even her demeanor seems timid (is there a more confident and aggressive side to her?) Unlike other coaches who pull scholarships for lack of production - Marist does not - as long as you are not a disciple problem and are doing what is asked of you, then you keep scholarship. I am sure the staff will be on her more this year to either figure it out, or move on.
Starting line up game 1
PG - K. Fischer
SG - K. Krick
SF - C. Cunningham
F - Z. Shazer
C - S. Bailey
My project most effective lineup - this will probably change 30 times
PG - K. Fisher
SG - J. Piddock
F - Z. Shazer
F - S. Bailey - I think Sam being the one to help Donnelly on Defense would give other teams fits
C - M. Donnelly

Is there any chance they still recruit a grad transfer from the portal? I'm surprised there wasn't a single D1/D2 senior who shot ~35% from three they could've brought in and see what happens.
I know last season was probably an outlier to the downside for most of the team, but Wax/Kennedy/Boylan/Ellison were 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th in 3pt %.
Feels like a lot is going to fall on the freshmen, which as you mention the 3pt line distance will take some adjusting to.

Leo the biggest uphill battle the staff faced when looking for the grad that fit was that Marist didn’t offer the Masters program they wanted

Summer is upon them and the number of open scholarships is dwindling. BCS dreams are fading fast. I’m hoping that a match for Marist for a guard/wing can still be made. I agree that a lot is going to fall on the freshman if a shooter isn’t added. No one on the roster except Fisher can shoot consistently from the 3, and barely so. Hopefully, either Piddock or Tompkins can fill that void. Baring an shooting epiphany from one of the existing players, bottom line is they still have no outside shooters unless it’s one of the freshman If Sam is starting at the 4 does that mean Zaria is coming off the bench? Zaria is a near-elite MAAC post player. However, she shot .176 from 3 last season. It would be a waste of her talent to ask her to play on the perimeter. I would much rather have Bailey coming off the bench at the 5, than starting at the 4. .

No we go big - Zaria as a 3/4 - see the line up that I think could be most effective at some point in the year - Also I do think Sam is actually a better 3 point shooter then others but playing the 5 took that away

They posted some photos from summer practice in the rec center. Fisher looks like she has no shoulder injury anymore.
Also yeah Maeve is legit that tall, she makes Sam Bailey look like Krick's height in comparison, lol.

SPU coach Marc Mitchell leaving for Division II University of Indianapolis. Big big big big YIKES. Giorgis quoted in the press release "Brian Giorgis, Marist College Women's Basketball Head Coach… "The loss of Marc from the MAAC is truly a gain for the University of Indianapolis. In a short period of time, Marc brought St. Peter's back to prominence and made them a strong force in our conference. UIndy fans will be excited with his tenacity and style of play. I will miss his energy on the sidelines."

wonder if any of the Fordham players will leave after Stephanie Gaitley was thrown out the door at 7 pm June 30. Sounds like there were allegations of abuse and legal action was threatened. I read a couple blog posts from former Fordham players detailing what they say she did. You can look them up, one is named Sims and the other Gaskin. Zach Braziller shared the Sims post on Twitter.
I feel I'm 99 percent on the side of players against authoritarian coaches, but the Sims account was a big nothing. I kept scrolling for something actionable and got to the end without seeing it. Recruited by the former coach, she stunk, didn't have a great attitude, and got ran off. It happens.
Gaskin's story was more uncomfortable, contemplations of self-harm, etc. Claims coach couldn't even remember her name because she wasn't a starter.
Gaitley doesn't seem like she was a walk in the park to play for or be around, but she won a lot of games and a bunch of current/former players are defending her online.

we were in on 2 I know of -
Anna DeWolf - she is a Sr. so probably not transferring
Maranda Nyborg - was someone they were very high on at 6'3" - going into her Jr with little PT - we just got our 6'5" player so is there more PT here?

Dewolfe is exactly what this roster is missing. A 2/3 that can shoot the 3. Like nomar said l, doubt she transfers and even if she does, probably not here
