From the SPU Board and rooting for Marist and my friend John Dunne. Your Team had another tough loss hope, with a few, recruits things will get better next year. Regarding the question of giving that foul in an attempt to get a steal I'll go the other way.....the chances of a steal are minimal and by fouling you put Siena in a potential 1/1 situation if, with time on the clock they drive to the basket and Marist commits an "on the floor" foul....too risky. Or if Sienatakes a shot with several seconds on the clock and there is a rebounding foul on Marist. Same thing.
The only way I would have given that "free" foul would not to do it for a steal but to let some time run off the clock and then give that "free" foul making Siena inbound the ball with not much time left. Guess it could be argued either way but unfortunately Marist was unlucky again.

If nothing else this game is a momentum game also ., the way we played ,except the first half ,shows we can play with anyone as all of us know by now .Im not one that in the beginning of the season after a few losses says lets hope for a good tourney run ...but at this point it's showing what Marist basketball is .Never quit , never give up hard nosed ball . Not many teams are going to want to face us in the first round .Looks like Niagara might drop out of the last 4 after a stunning win against St. Peters so our perfect match up might not be there but im not worried. Looking forward to another great game tomorrow .

Pickett basically lets the clock run down to 10 seconds, then tries to penetrate. Maybe making them restart the offense with <10 on the clock makes a difference. Not questioning Dunne. I'm sure he had a good reason based on how he thinks his team will handle that situation. An exceptional player simply rose to the occasion. They are going to miss him next year.

But leaving an entire half of basketball on the table against your alleged "rival" at home when they are in first place doesn't exactly engender a feeling of optimism. At least for me. Also,I don't think anyone will see Marist across from them and say "oh cr@p" in fear. If they can get the next two I'll agree they have some momentum.

Another game from John Dunne and the Heartbreakers, his defense keeps us in games when the offense doesn't show up. They shoot 4-19 from 3, Sagl takes 0 shots and no rebounds in 20 minutes, St. Furcy has as many T.O.s 4 as points, and the only foul shots 6, come from centers. Without guards who can penetrate or create their own shots the offense is rotate the ball around the perimeter until they force up a shot before the shot clock expires, it's tough to watch.

If it were a different year id agree more with you . Again I would not be surprised if Canisius made a run this year .Two things going for us goiing into the Tourney ..1) Dunne as coach .,his teams always give a ferocious fight in the tourney .and 2) we just can't always be on the wrong end of these close games .,

The bar has been set so low that close losses (regardless of the fact that the teams overall and MAAC record is terrible) and being a "tough out" in the MAAC tourney play in game is considered success.

Sagl is effective when Marist is up against less athletic opponents, aka not often, or when the defense makes a mistake against an athletic team. To get over the hump next season they need immediate help. So two JUCOs IMO is the way to go. A guard with the skills 46 describes above and a 6'8" guy who can score from the outside like the kid from Shelton State Khalil Johnson who I am happy they are involved with.

If they had a penetrating PG, they win last night's game. And many more. I agree about Sagl. He should be a specialist going forward. Didn't even get a shot off last night. St Furcy has talent but he has to improve the shot and the handle. Dribbles out of control way too often. I felt for Jack C. He was fending off with the arm again. Like him, but if he can't improve that he doesn't offer much value.
I'm liking Bell, Enoh, Jones, Byrd and Cubbage/Herasme. That's a nice starting five/first sub. ...Add another big and a scoring guard.
Who knows how good Bell could be if he had more space to operate. With no PG to worry about, things get clogged easily.
Yes, kudos to Tobias. He did a great job. And I've always thought he could get 6-8 a game with his baby hook. He just needs to think score.
And I think Jones showed he's as good as most in the league when he's playing smart. He puts these numbers up in 20 minutes a game. Sucks he went 1-2 twice at the line.

Good point, old fox. At that point I would agree with you and take that extra foul with only 10 sec. left. My only reservation is how would you explain that in a huddle and, at the same time, have your players watch the clock instead of their opponent. Not easy to do but it's over and second guessing, while interesting, won't change the result.
Good luck in the Tourney and recruiting some more players to improve your Team.
By the way, there is a SPU connection with your area. One of our best former players Rich Rinaldi was from up there as was my best golfer, Nick Dilio, who was instrumental in helping me win 3 MAAC Golf Championships a few years ago. Nick is currently in Florida playing the mini-tours. Why doesn't Marist have a Golf Team? Only one in the MAAC and it's a hot bed of golf talent. Finally, and I think we talked about this before, my high school classmate Larry Plover ('61) operated one of the most famous Bars in the '60's and '70's. Think it was called Barefoot Sally's ( you can correct ) and I spent many an hour in that place.

Um, that is where Marist is right now after a decade of being non competitive. This is the only year I can honestly say I don't think we will be overmatched by any opponent in the maac tourney. It's a small step, but needed. Get competitive, then win more, then hopefully win the title. Dunne has started the competitive part, now they need a couple ballhandler next year to help the winning more part.

Here are a couple of posts from the Siena board reinforcing my hatred for them. They think they are the greatest team and we should bow down to them for allowing us to play them every year, no matter what the standings say.
hoopjunkie:
Yayyyyyyy!!!! We won!!!!
That better?
Pull that shit down at Monmouth and see what happens. Marist is AWFUL. Doesnt belong on the same court as us.
Another from hoopjunkie:
The one positive from this game is that we won getting absolutely nothing from Burns or Camper.
Their 2 stiffs combined for 24 points inside.
We desperately need a rim protector on our roster next year. _____________________________
Maybe hoopjunkie should reexamine the two teams and box score and figure out who the stiff bigs were out there last night. Who the hell does he think he is? I am rooting for Marist in the tournament and anybody playing against Siena. Thankfully, they are a very thin team and will struggle in the tournament.

In 1970 Larry Plover opened the venue as “Sal’s last Chance Saloon”. Plover turned the old vaudeville theatre into a music venue; welcoming legendary acts such as The Police, The Ramones, Muddy Waters, Pete Seeger and Charles Mingus. He was one heck of a banjo player. Wow. Another place and time.

I was walking behind a few of the Siena fans leaving McCann last night. Listening to them I couldn’t believe how arrogant and delusional they are about their team.
