This will probably be unpopular as Murray did a great job here. I am not happy about this as a fan of basketball at the college. Ofcourse a lot more than just basketball is involved in his job:).

If rumors are true, and Yellan leaves and Murray becomes the new Marist president, does that change anything for basketball?

Not really, when Murray left there was a definitive plan for the school, my guess and only a guess is that he will be brought back to get things back on track and help select next president

This reeks of something else. He was here what, 1 and half years? How bad could the financial situation really have suffered?

well this seems less than great. I'm sure we'll get more to the story in the coming days/weeks but it reads like the trustees are accusing Yellen of some kind of financial misconduct or misappropriation or yanno, whatever accounting words.

Or. a nice cover story. "wasn't serving best financial issues of college". This reeks bad.

Long time lurker, first time poster, recent alum. I have some insider info on what happened. I am sure there is more that will come out but you can chew on this for now. Yellen was indeed voted out by the board of trustees, although I think it will officially be styled as a parting of ways or resignation or something nicer when the school announces it. It came down to two things more than anything:
a. They did not feel that Yellen was a strong leader for the school. Dennis Murray was a very visible public figure at Marist. He went to music concerts, he went to sports games, alumni events, other events, and so on. Yellen was from my understanding much more distant and absent. This rubbed people the wrong way. I did see on some social media after that scare at the culinary with the music department for example that at least one kid was upset Yellen didn't go out of his way to meet with the kids, and even said "I know Yellen doesn't come to these things like Dennis Murray did, but..." He may have done so anyway, but at least at the time, that was the case.
b. The school had a large financial surplus that was built up over the course of years under Murrays tenure. Yellen supposedly blew through a sizable part of it (I don't know how big, but big enough for people to care) at a pace that made trustees or administrators uncomfortable. I do not think the school is in any sort of financial trouble, much less in a way that would affect the athletic department. Their enrollment has increased a lot, and tuition with it. They would not be starting the medical school if they were having money problems. I am also very confident Maker's contract has nothing to do with it.
My understanding is that Murray will be interim president for two years while they search for another replacement and also groom that person to take over for him full time. To be honest, I think Yellen was behind the 8 ball from the beginning. Replacing a 35 year president who was well liked by so many people is a very tough task. Whoever comes next will be compared to Yellen and not Murray.

Maybe Yellen was only brought on to fix MBB?

Whoever comes next will be compared to Yellen and not Murray. On point a. Agreed, my limited interactions with him were slightly awkward even with having a good mutual friend to assimilate against. I also know his hip made him less able to go (stay) at events. On point b. It could be the NYC expansion. That was a chuck of change. I don't know the NYC office market but I can't see that as being a horrible $$$ decision. In the end to be fair, Murray is a really hard act to follow.

Being the guy after the guy...and make no mistake about it, Dennis Murray was the guy at Marist...was going to be an impossible job no matter who it was. Like rfalum said...Murray was so visible that I met him as a student multiple times. That's pretty crazy for a school with 6,000 or so kids. My guess is Yellen wasn't like that at all.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE MARIST COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Dear Marist Alumni, Parents, and Friends:
I am writing to share with you the significant news that David Yellen has made the decision to resign as president of Marist College. Although he is proud of what has been accomplished during his tenure, he has chosen to pursue other leadership positions in higher education.
The Board of Trustees has appointed President Emeritus Dennis Murray as Interim President. Marist is very fortunate to have Dr. Murray in this role because of his deep understanding of the workings of the College and ongoing relationships with various constituencies. Dr. Murray will serve in this capacity until the Board can determine a process and timeline for the selection of a new President. We will provide you with updates during this transition period, but I would emphasize that Marist is a strong institution that will continue to advance in a positive direction.
I know the entire community joins me in wishing David and his wife Leslie all the best as they embark upon this new chapter in their lives. Marist is fortunate to have committed and dedicated alumni, parents, and friends, and we encourage you to stay active and engaged in the life of the College. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer.
Ross Mauri ’80 Chair, Marist College Board of Trustees
