Serious question. I hear people mention the Commish Cup from time to time as that’s something we, as fans, should care about. Should we? If so, why? true story, I emailed someone at the MAAC a couple months ago because I had a question as to how the scoring worked for the Cup in certain sports vs others, her response answered my question but also said "thanks for asking and following, I usually feel like nobody cares." I care, because I think the notion of a year-long competition where every league game matters across a wide variety of disciplines, where certain titles are worth more points than others and sports you're bad at can be non-counters is an interesting thought exercise. I certainly don't expect many people to share my wonkiness and I've grown out of trying to evangelize and proselytize people.

So it’s kinda like a bragging rights thing that most not care or know anything about?

it must be the ADs and presidents doing the bragging then, as in most fan communities if a supporter starts bragging about winning the all-sports cup but that school didn't win in football or men's basketball he or she must know they're about to be laughed out of the room.

We are a mediocre sports program and worst in the arguably the one that's most important. Our one saving grace used to be women's basketball, but we are second best in that now as well.
We are the third highest endowed university in the MAAC. From an academics standpoint, the school has never been better. I graduated more than a decade ago and holy hell, the school looks amazing and transformed every time I go. So why is athletics going backwards? It's unacceptable IMO to be this mediocre-especially in the MAAC, a league that has no prestige whatsoever. I have no idea the hand that Tim Murray has been dealt, but the school needs to do something.

The Admins don't look at athletics as a fan. They look at athletics as educators. If they didn't TM would have been gone long ago due to the hot mess he made of MBB. (The coach took the fall) While the mediocrity drives us nuts as fans, the admins probably look at athletics in its entirety and say it checks off enough of the right boxes to help the college achieve its mission. www.marist.edu/student-life/athletics

For the last decade or so - the Athletic department has been put on the back burner. New dorms, new building, new programs, new campus in NYC, new Med School.... that IS all they really care about. Sports are nice and needed but winning doesn't change what they are trying to accomplish academically and frankly they do not care. (Oh sure they say they do - but they are doing just enough to get by as mediocre)

Still, I think WBB should at full allotment of schollies and a new FB coach found at the least.

Also too many schools at D1 level. Stony brook, buffalo, etc. MAAC used to get better athletes now they go to other schools. MAAC schools really dropped the ball back when there was an opportunity to make this conference something special. No investment in facilities and keeping useless Ensor for 3 decades has led to MAACs decline

I don't think they are ready to turn on a member that simply can't foot the bill if the others are ready to open up the treasury. Don't think fundraising is the answer either. My guess is those dollars get shared across the whole sports portfolio, unless someone wants to endow the a MBB program.

No investment in facilities and keeping useless Ensor for 3 decades has led to MAACs decline Stony Brook has become a example of an institution that made a name for itself both academically and athletically. Within a span of three decades, SBU went from a less than mediocre Division III school to a regional mid-major threat in many sports. If I remember correctly, their new president started this by cleaning house and starting from the ground up. *Their basketball teams moved out of Pritchard Gymnasium three years ago and moved into a spiffy 4,000 seat Stony Brook Arena (albeit not as aesthetically pleasing as Monmouth's but good venue nonetheless). SBU remodeled Pritchard and it's now home to the volleyball program AND hosted two A.E. volleyball tourneys. *Their football and lacrosse programs were playing at local high schools until they built Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in 2002. The Seawolves have bee going to the FCS Playoffs since 2010; while both men's and women's lacrosse are ranked in their top 25 nowadays. Also, it takes a lot of huzpah for a university to turn down offers from the Big East and the Mid-American Conference. I'm not saying for Marist to be like Stony Brook overnight, I'm saying that this is what can be accomplished when an administration is finally fed up with being mediocre.

They also pulled a complete stunner by reaching the College World Series in Omaha in 2012 (Kent State crashed the party that year too). Alum Joe Nathan was so impressed he bought them a new stadium.

Marist mens Lacrosse just 2 weeks ago beat Stone Brook 10-5 at SB. And Marist softball will be very good over next 4 years with freshman pitcher Calista Phippen leading us to possibly 4 consecutive NCAA tournaments.

Phippen is gonna have every BCS softball school trying to poach her , hopefully Marist is enough for her. Softball is 4-12 in games she doesn’t pitch . That doesn’t scream 4 years of NCAA tournament
