Mike Maker is a good man. He took on a difficult task and unfortunately he failed. This is the right decision.
That said, whomever is named the new coach needs to be given A LOT of latitude. By TM and the Administration. Allow JUCOs, ability to play down (i.e. St. Francis; LIU; etc.) and spend the money on better recruiting.

Just reading about Tubby Smith talking about transfers ..there were 800 last year in D 1 ..don't know if that was basketball or combined ..anyway ,it's the new normal i guess ,.so with that many we've got to get us some

I am willing to bet we lose a few kids to transfer and I will be surprised if both recruits come. Where they going? Which one of them has outplayed the program? Nowhere to go but up. Hey just a guess - but IMO every international player could very easily decide to go home, Besselink has other offers could revisit some of them, L. Nedrow had a real good Sr season and might field a call or 2, and A. William's might have showed enough promise to get some interest. The 4 Seniors next year are not going anywhere. Right now we have only used 11 or 13 scholarships. So New coach has 2 more to use next year and 4 more year after that. Much will depend on who they bring in and to the existing players believe in him?

Richie Mitchell is a JUCO, so Maker was already able to do this.

Can TM survive another disaster hire? OBTW he even F’ed this up by saying 4 days ago Maker was staying. What coach will want to work for this guy? I fear the next coach will fail just like the previous three unless TM is shown the door too

From the Journal Article:
"But, the men's basketball team's problems predate the man who was lured to Marist from Division III Williams College in 2014.
Marist's last winning season came in 2007-08, Matt Brady's last at the helm. Chuck Martin served as coach for five seasons; his team's best record of 14-18 came in 2011-12 before he was fired one year later. Jeff Bower coached in 2013-14 before leaving Marist to become the Detroit Pistons' general manager.
Combined, Marist has a 79-236 record in the last decade."
There must be something other than a Coach problem here.

If you all don’t mind an outside opinion. The problem at Marist is that the standards to get scholar athletes admitted is greater than any of the other MAAC schools. Marist just can’t take the best basketball players they have to get through admissions. No where is that tougher in the MAAC than Marist. Doesn’t matter who you hire if admissions at Marist is playing by a different set of rules your in the hole before you begin.

With Coach Maker out, I am leaving the Marist community. I wish Marist basketball the best of luck. The huge problem that I see for the program is the ability to recruit great players. I saw enough, over the last four years, to know that it is easy enough to identify top players, it is another thing entirely to convince them to come to Marist. The kids that Mike Maker tried to get to come to Marist, and the kids he finally got to commit, bore little resemblance to one another. Maybe, if you can get a name coach to take the job, things could change. Maybe the son of a famous coach, like Patrick Beilein from LeMoyne, for example. Maybe, with some help from his father can get very good players to take a second look at Marist. I really don’t see any other way. It has been fun to follow and root for Marist. I’ve been to dozens of practices and games, and have really enjoyed the people I have met. Marist is a great institution, and deserves a great basketball team. Go Red Foxes!

Thanks for the well wishes and the insights you provided into Maker over the years. I think we all realize the issues Marist has created for itself in the MAAC, and it's a shame that Mike Maker, who always represented Marist with the utmost professionalism and dignity, couldn't figure out the puzzle that Marist MBB has become.
