I'm curious what damages we asked for and how we attempted to prove them.

Here is what they where asking for
When James Madison basketball coach Matt Brady left Marist College in 2008, he cost his former employer $420,247 - at least in one economist's opinion.
James Markham, a senior economist who was hired by Marist to testify as an expert witness in the school's breach-of-contract lawsuit against Brady, calculated the damages in court Thursday.
Marist alleges that Brady broke his contract when he contacted at least four of Marist's recruits on JMU's behalf and offered them basketball scholarships, according to the complaint filed in New York State Supreme Court.
Brady was called to the stand Thursday, with much of his testimony dealing with his personal and professional background, before Judge Robert M. DiBella ended the session at about 12:30 p.m. The trial, being heard in front of a jury of five men and three women, is scheduled to continue at 2 p.m. Monday.
Markham, who works at the Center for Forensic Economic Studies in Philadelphia, said that Brady caused damage in three categories: the loss of Marist's 2008 recruits, the increased cost of hiring three new assistant coaches when Brady left, and decreased ticket revenue for men's basketball games in subsequent years.
Markham said the damages from lost recruits equals $188,899. He arrived at the number, he said, by calculating half of Brady's salary and 75 percent of his three assistant coaches' salaries - the portion of their job relating to recruiting - for the 2007-08 year. - I actually thought they had a shot at this part - seemed to make sense using Marist time and money to recruit for JMU the rest was a real stretch
Markham said after Brady's departure, Marist had no coach and no assistant coaches, and had to quickly fill those positions. It cost Marist an extra $147,850, he said, to hire three new assistant coaches. He factored the difference between their salaries and the previous coaches for the three years Brady would have been under contract with Marist.
"It was simply a more expensive group," he said.
Markham said the loss in ticket sales from 2008-2011, compared to the last year Brady was coach, totaled $83,498. Marist went 1-29 in 2009-10, two seasons after Brady left.

Attorney Paul Sullivan says Marist sued to establish that a contract is binding on both college and coach.
The contract is NOT binding there is no penalty in ignoring it? This was a loss by Marist - if i was Brady i could give a shit if I lied cheated and stole if all i get is someone telling me i was wrong - who cares.

Fast forward two to three years from now. Coach Martin has had 3 solid years and has an opportunity to move on. Will Marist sue him as well...........Its the nature of the business....move on before you get fired. Although its not right, the entire coaching industry is corrupt from recruiting to coaches leaving, etc. Lets look forward not backward.

Hopefully Brady had to sell something important to him to afford his attorney fees:).

If nothing else, he "sold" some of his pride and dignity. I don't understand how they could decide he breached his contract, but it did not cost the school anything. I guess time searching for new coaches and recruits is worth nothing? And they paid Brady and the gang while they were still at Marist to recruit those players to JMU. How could that be worthless? ?? I guess losing pride and dignity and eating some humble pie is the price Brady will pay...which can be costly to some individuals.

The monetary figure Marist presented was fictitious at best. The jury saw right through that. Hence the $0 monetary award. Marist won however since they proved Brady breached his contract. While Marist did not get a penny of Brady money they hurt his future earnings significantly. On the other hand Marist has a black mark on it as far as future coaches go.
